    Guys,

Does anyone know if I can just use a UK Megadrive 2 or PSone PSU with the PC Engine Duo-R, or will I need to use the Japanese NEC plug with a stepdown?

Apparently these PSU should work, but I just wanted to check.

    Thanks,
    Paul

The NEC family of power supplies is a big pain in the ass. I would assume that something *doesn't* work unless you're told specifically it does by someone that's tried. For example, I'm quite sure that each PC-Engine/Duo has a different power supply.

Gaijinpunch is right, lots of the different PC Engine iterations had different power requirements. the Duo-R is 1amp, + polarity and 9v. Check the psu for PS1 and MDII to see if they match, I can't remmeber what they output off hand.

OK, I have the Duo-R now, and I can compare PSU, there is a little different, but I think it would work, just wanted to check on here with someone who might have a better understanding of power supply ratings!

    Japanese Duo-R PSU:
    Input AC 100V, 50/60hz 19VA
    Output DC 9V, 1000mA
    Polarity - o +

    UK Megadrive 2 PSU:
    Input 240V ~ 50hz
    Output 10V 850mA
    Polarity - o +

So polarity is the same on both, but the MD2 PSU is rated 1V higher, but less mA. I know the PC Engine and Core Grafx can use an MD1 PSU which is rated at 9V, while their Japanese PSU are rated at 8V, so I think it will work, but before I do it, I thought I would check here.

    Cheers,
    Paul

No, if the Duo needs 1A don't use one that gives out LESS. More is fine. Go and get a universal supply from Maplin, Argos or your local small electronics store.

You want a 9V 1A supply with the same polarity (incidentally writing the polarity like that on here is pretty meaningless - you're better off saying centre positive or negative) and the same size connector. If you're in doubt, an electronics store will match it up for you.

Bit of a necro post but here are the Turbo Duo R PSU specifications that worked for me.

Your PSU must output the following (as stated on the official NEC Japanese PSU):

    9v DC
1000ma (or 1a - they are the same thing)
Centre positive polarity or in diagram terms, (-)---(---(+)

Now for the connector sizes that I couldn't find anywhere else:

    Connector inner diameter is 1.7mm
    Connector outer diameter is 4.75mm

This thread is one of the top hits on google for "Turbo Duo R UK PSU" so I hope it helps someone else.

A PSOne AC adapter will work just fine on the Duo-R, it puts just enough voltage for the two 7805s inside the console and twice the amperage. A slim PS2 PSU will work fine too.

I just bought a Japanese Duo-R and I use a Japanese Mega Drive 1 PSU on it with an adaptor to change the end socket size as the MD socket size is too big. Check it out below.
