Okay, I'm embarking on a portablization project and would like to make a handheld PC Engine. Nevermind that there's already something called the GT; I want to create my own. So I wonder, would I really need a six-button layout? How about three? I want to do two to economize on space, but six is appealing if a good game warrants it. I'm really set on three now that I think of it. So, are there a substantial amount of six- or three-button games I should keep in mind when designing the case for this? Street Fighter 2 comes to mind, but that can't be the only one, can it?
Hey this is a great idea. The GT while a very nice system is bulky with a tinny screen. For it's time though it was awesome  I'd say that most games use only 2 or 3 buttons so you'd be safe going with the two or three button option. Wheeler is the main PC Engine and Mega Drive dude to ask though and probably the future Marty dude as well  Yakumo
A fair few SNK arcade card games use multi button pads, but since your building a handheld I doubt you'll be playing any CD games, so thats probably not an issue... You can get on fine through the PCE library with 2 buttons, I'd go with that
Strip Fighter II and Street Fighter II' are the only 6 button Hu games I can think of, I can't even think of one 3 button game however, what did you have in mind? It's a good project, GT has a horrible screen and pretty poor mono audio.
Let's see, SFII, World Heroes II, Art of Fighting, a couple of shooters (that could also use the Run button). If I were going to do it, I'd do a three button setup, that way SFII will at least be playable. No US games used more than 2 buttons. What a shame the PC engine was in America. So much potential. Such terrible marketing.
Altered Beast, Forgotten Worlds are some multi-button games I can think of offhand aside from the Obvious Street Fighter titles.
Thanks a lot for the heads-up you guys. I'm not aiming for TG-16 game support in my unit, mainly PCE. Can I have a confirmation on any games that use the three-button layout?
The 3-button controller (and games that "support" it) is a sham controller, with the 3rd button only selectable between acting as an extra Select or Run button. Altered Beast came out in 1989, 3 years before the Avenue Pad 3, so how could it support the AV Pad?
