pc engine/jamma interface - bootleg software. odd stuff ahoy!

I should be picking a couple of these ugly little things next week or so (fingers crossed):

it's a modified pc engine hooked up to pcb which has a jamma connector. there's scant info on this thing online, though it's evidently something that probably came out of deepest asia.

what caught my eye about the one(s?) I'm buying is that it comes with Pac-Land - that thing poking out of the card slot is Pac-Land.
most pirate software to come out for pc engine has emulated somewhat the look of the HUcard (though if memory serves there is a chinese pc engine clone which took carts - maybe this is similar) - this makes not attempt to do so - probably because it was made for arcade use - a way for arcade operators to offer Pac Land to their customers without owning the real pcb.
weird stuff non the less.

anyone come across this stuff before?

this thing is going to need a scrub when I get ahold of it.

 

When you get it can you post some bigger shots of it? This looks to be one very interesting bit of kit !

I'm pretty sure there's actually an official turbographx to jamma adaptor. I'm sure I saw one for sale a while back. Either turbographx or some other common console.

 

I read somewhere that the idea was there but it wasn't carried through - I might be wrong, my memory is a little fuzzy, but I'm pretty certain there is no official interface for arcade.

The PC Engine jamma thing is official kit, not sure if this is the same kit, but I have (or had ? :/ ) an issue of CVG where they did a news feature on it circa 1989.

 

The weird thing is one of the stickers on this baby has Spanish text.

"to manipulate the board or change games, keep the machine unplugged"

DevilRedeemed is in Argentina, so it wouldn't suprise me - but where is Barakka?

but the one I'll be picking up - which is the same one as is shown on that website - doesn't appear to coincide with that board pictured there. looking foward to picking it up in any case - especially for the sake of checking out the game cart/pcb/thingy


edit: tour vision? what is known about them? are their ware official?

 

How rare are these things? I want one.

Yes, you can see that on the 4th picture. They only used the top of the HuCARD (where there are the ROMs), and they connected them to PCB board.

 

excellent!! so it is not official gear? looks alot more sophisticated than what I'm picking up, but then once it's in the cab, who cares.

 

little update. so I went over to see what deal I could pull off (with next to no money in my pocket and a load of PCBs for possible trade) - and nothing, he wasn't really interested in what I had to offer. infact he had decided he wasn't going to let go of the pcengine jamma thing, as it was coming in handy at events (he rents games and cabs out for parties and stuff). what he did offer me though, was practically the same thing - but this one was the clone pcengine shuttle - with no lid on it - and the same pcb to make it compatible with jamma. it just needed some fine tuning but I saw it in action and it was really cool. played a bit of Heavy Unit on his cab (had my HuCard handy) and it was good - probably the same experience of playing on one of those custom NEC monitors with the pcengine incorporated.

so I have to see if he's still game, but yeah that's what's on the table. not sure if I want it - not too cheap actually.
the 'real' pcengine jamma unit was actually really nice - it wasn't badly made - the pcengine sits on a tablet it shares with the pcb in front of it. weighed nicely, not too much, was quite compact.

that must be what Baseley09 was aluding to.

so no offical pcengine arcade ware from NEC it would seem.

 

There was an official Turbo Grafx 16 arcade board (not sure if you are all asking specifically about PC Engine, or either version). It was made by United Amusement in Los Angeles:

If you just want to use a PCE in a jamma cab why don't you hack one?
You just have to pick the RGB signals from the back connector and hack a Joypad and you are done. (Check Gamesx for pinouts and info)

You are right , there were no official arcade PCE from NEC, all those that you see are hacks made by third party companies, but there are a couple of games from DECO that use Hudson-NEC Custom chips.
