So I bought a PC-Engine DUO today...Excited that I finally have the first half of what I need to play Rondo Of Blood at home (as it has 3.00 built in) I purchase it.

Unfortunatly I had only the "word" of the store on whether or not it actually played games. And the problem? The CD-Drive doesnt work. At All.

Now, I can already assume that there is no way to repair this (such is my luck), but I wanted to ask anyway. So, any help would be appreciated.

    There's a few things...

I would see if the spindle is pressed down, my unit had it compressed, I had to pull it off (genlty) and put it back on. Duo worked again, no problem.

If you have an OS screen, it can be fixed.
No OS, well, then you have to check the ics. (or on board fuse)

I have the OS screen (it boots into the Sys Card 3.00 screen then fails when you try to load a disc....at the moment I am just testing audio CDs

As for the spindle I assume you mean the bit on the Duo lid? It hangs down as I assume it is supposed to (e.g. it is very slack and doesnt seem to jam).

When hte disc is being "read" the machine makeslots of motor noises and I do hear the disc spinning okay.

Just to check, you aren't using CD-R/RW's are you - old drives can be a bit iffy on these.
If the disc is spinning then I'd guess that it was a laser error - How long does the OS wait before announcing it has failed? Long enough to thoroughly read the disc?

no, the motorized part that spins.

Oh yeah, it won't read cdrs.

I can only get it to read cdrs burned ar 1-4x.

Try a real disc or cd.

Its real discs I've been trying. They spin for maybe 10 seconds then I get a disc placement error on the Sys Card screen.
