Hey community ! I was just wondering about the game boxes of the PC-FX. Some of them are just in jewel-case (for example this one [ebay-link]) and other games are in big-boxes like this one. Why are there such differences ? Greetings
When the FX first came out NEC had more money and more balls, so the first games are in the big cases. But it became clear just about on day 1 that the system wasn't going anywhere (as a side note, are there any major systems like the FX that pretty much died at launch? I remember the first week numbers... sheesh^^. In Japan, companies are always fighting for shelf space, and giant boxed games for an unpopular system wouldn't sit well with retailers. They were also much more expensive to make because they were custom and each would come with: 1) Custom Sized Case 2) Cover Insert 3) Inside Foam 4) Custom Size Instruction Booklet 5) Case Seal when switching to DVDs cut it down to: 1) Low Priced Mass Manufactured Case 2) Common Sized Instruction Booklet My guess is that NEC wanted the games to have the feel of PC games that came in similar (albeit larger) cases. After a while they just said "screw it" and saved money.
What HCK said. And the guys behind the PC-FX were on crack anyway. I mean really.. cancle Bomberman Hi-10 for one, which would boost sales by its own and concentrate on anime games only?
On a related note, can the PC-FX output RGB? Also, I always assumed PC-FX cases were basically the same as Mega Drive/Genesis cases (on the outside, at least).
FX cases are like the bastard love child of Neo Geo cases and MD cases. But very, very close to old FM Towns and PC-98 cases.
They are actually really beautiful. A little larger in size than MD cases and pretty much identical in function, although they are slightly bent at the spine which is why they resemble the (later) Neo Geo cases so much. A piece of foam inside keeps the CD from whacking around inside the case (like in PAL Saturn boxes, don't we all love those?), similar to US Sega CD/Saturn games. @lalilulelo Like all NEC consoles, it can't without modifications. I've not heard of anyone trying or succeeding, but I suppose it could be modded if the chip outputs RGB like the PC-Engine chip. From what I can gather it's an updated version of the PCE-chip, so there's a chance. Anyone wanna go for the challenge?
