I've got a big problem! My PC powers up and the motherboard lap lights and the fan on the CPU spins but it won't boot. What is odd is that the PC's HardDrive light says it's accessing them even after I disconected the power from them! The DVD & CD drives have power going to them and seem to work. Everything seems normal apart from it won't boot.
I've checked everything and all that seemed odd was a bit of black gunk on top of one of the resistors. Is it time to buy a new MotherBoard? Please help ASAP because I'm now having to use the Wii to access the net(°~°)

Unplug / disconnect any expansion cards except for video.

Try booting it with no hdd,no optical drives. Try to get to bios.

If that fails, try another video card. Check the video cable for bent pins.

If that fails, then possibly the MB is bad. If the capacitor has "black junk"
it probably blew and needs to be replaced. I am guessing you mean capacitor and not resistor.

Good luck and let me know what transpires.

If you can pick up a POST PCI card, those are great, they diagnose all the BIOS issues without needing to see the screen or listen to speaker beeps (most comps don't have speakers anymore).

No video and HDD light often means dead mobo, or some kind of mobo issue. Try unplugging it and taking out the CMOS battery (CR2032 watch battery) and leaving it for an hour or 2.

If your comp is 2-5 years old, bad caps could be a problem, as that was the core of the Capacitor Plague. Instability, random reboots, refusal to boot, etc. All caused by a wave of shitty capacitors. Look for leaking, bulged or deformed caps, and try replacing them.

ah yes a capacitor blew. I'll try unplugging everything though to see what happens. The video card is intergrated though so I can't that.

Replace it I say. If it's just one, it should be cheap and easy. If you've done the DC F1 cap, thats all you need to know.

    (Doesn't want to sound patronising)

I ended up buying a new Mobo for 800Â¥ but because my old mobo had intergrated video & sound cards I now need to buy them for the new mobo. Actually this new mobo is better than my old one plus has more PCI & Memory slots. Just glad that my CPU and mem9ry fit it. Any how I'll buy the vid & sound cards tomorrow. I just hope XP doesn't start pissing me arround over the new mobo.

    Thanks for the help guys!

PS: When will Nintendo alow the use of USB keyboards on the Wii? idiots they are for not making that a default release item.

xp should be good enough to plug and play everything. It might run like crap, but it should run.

Ah! Did you try that, then? I was wondering if a USB keyboard might work. Guess they'll be wanting me to buy a nice wireless one especially for the Wii...

Good luck with the mobo. Even if XP does give you crap, you should be able to get M$ to reactivate (though expect to spend some time in phone tree hell)...

XP will either A) boot fine, let you in and reinstall new drivers or
    B) As soon as the loading screen is gone and the welcome screen is due, it'll reboot. No safe mode either. Prepare to format.

It should be fine. My server died and I reinstalled Server 2003 on a whole new computer. I then activated it and had to answer on the phone about 10 questions as to why I was doing it. I basically had to say the PC died and it was a new motherboard.

I don't know if XP does the same thing but it's something to be aware of.

For some reason everytime I change my mobo XP gives me a read error and i need to format my HDD in order to use it. AFAIK this is the only issue you can have replacing mobos if you have all drivers (ussualy they come in a CD when you buy it)
