So i got a Gigabyte motherboard yesterday and i decided to install it straight away in order to have a basic computer up and running while i get a new case, cpu ...etc. I got everything set up easily and fine and got a small 40gb hdd formatted and windows installed on it but whenever i power on my pc with my USB keyboard plugged in it freezes whiles trying to detect any IDE devices after giving me a single POST beep to say everythings ok but if i unplug the keyboard and then reset the machine it will fire up. I used a ps/2 keyboard to check that legacy usb devices and usb keyboard settings where enabled in the bios and they were but still no luck. The keyboard is a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 and it wasn't causing a problem on my old board. I am looking to return it but don't want to go through the hassle of doing that.
If you plug the keyboard in after booting, does it recognise it then without locking up & do you have other USB things connected (especially power hungry stuff like unpowered HDD cases)? I'm wondering if the power draw is upsetting the USB bus when you boot - as far as I'm aware, the keyboard would simply be ignored if the USB keyboard support was off in the BIOS.
If i plug in the keyboard after booting it just continues to load into windows, i only have a USB mouse and wireless USB adapter plugged in at the same time and i know they are not power hungry. Limey your right the keyboard would be ignored if legacy support wasn't enable in the bios but it wouldn't just freeze the machine. The only thing i can think of is there is a fault with the onboard USB but right now i have my parts are in an old case which doesn't have any USB front panel so i can't test to see if using them would work and i don't have anyothe Add-on USB card to try either.
What's the model of the Gigabyte motherboard? It might be an issue specific to that board (I saw some comments about USB related boot issues with GA-7N400 Pro boards last night). I'd also try booting without the wireless adapter plugged in - though I doubt that it's the problem. If you have another USB keyboard around, that might also be worth a shot.
The model is GA-73VM-S2. I've finally go it to boot further (several times) with the usb keyboard plugged in But whenever i press delete to entre the bios it seem to hang.
Check the RAM first. Run memtest on it, to see if the RAM is any good. If the RAM fails any test, that could be your culprit. If not, then do a bios update or reflash the BIOS. Just try to get a hold of a PS2 keyboard or do it via Windows, but I would recommend updating it via the floppy drive method
the ram is ok, when i got the mobo on friday and after setting it all up with XP and stuff i started to test the memory since i wanted to do some Overclokcing. I have updated the bios to the latest F3 i believe, was the 1st thing i done after setting up windows and getting the drivers all instaled since i thought that might be the culprit.
Thanks for your help guys. I was thinking about RMA'ing it back for a replacement but that means i will be without a computer so before i decide to do that i'll wait till i get my new E2180 cpu and install that and sometime within the next week i will purchase a better PSU becuase that might a problem since its only a 450watt and was used in my old system which didn't need a big psu.
