My interest in the PCE has been growing lately and I'm very interested in getting a setup that plays all or most formats ([perhaps not SuperGrafx though) from NECs bewildering legions of add-ons. I was thinking my best option is to go witht he LaserActive pCE PAC as I already have a LaserActive unit (including a SEGA PAC so I know trhe port works). Considering buying separate units etc would probably end up costing me more than the $300 or so this would cost, as wlel as the horror stories I always hear of the TurboDuo, and the overall sleekness and all-in-one-ness of the PAC, this will ikely be the route I take. My question is - will a Japanese LaserActive NEC PAC work in a NTSC-UC LaserActive unit? And if so, does the JP PAC play US TG16 Hu-Cards etc? (Not oo concerned if it doesn't.) Any advise appreciated, thanks.
The foreign pac wont play another region's games. I believe that a jap pac will work in a us laseractive though.
That's the only piece in the NEC library that I'm really unsure of (never interested me). Traditionally CDs don't have region lockout, but Hucards do, so once you'd one w/ this, you get to worry about how to play your Hucards from the other region, as converters are few and far between.
Not altogether concerned about foreign games compatibilirty; just want to know if the unit itself will be recognized in a US/Canada LaserActive. Also - I recently bouught a new PAL TurboGrafx 16 from Play-Asia; seeing as (I'm fairuly sure?) this was never really offcially released and thus no official PAL games made ( i think?) does anyone know whta region games work with the unit? Thanks again!
You're right. it was definitely never released, so I'm extremely curious as to what the hell will play on that thing.
As am I. I'll let you know ASAP, but the damn thing is on its way via sea mial from Japan so anoher motnh's wait or so, duriing which time I'll pick up ome fo terhose cheap hu-cards from LikSang just to test it out. I'm not really bothered about Hu-Cards as it's really the CD games I want to play , which s pretty much why I'm not bothered which region PAC I get.
I'm going on second-hand info here, but I think the PAL TurboGrafx's play US Hu-Cards - so, between that and a Jap LaserActive PAC, you should be able to cover everything (bar SuperGrafx).
So what's the story, they made thousands of them, with nice manuals, packaging, boxes, and powersupplies, with custom AV cables and a pack-in game, only to never sell them? Seems fishy to me, on what are we basing this claim? It plays US games. ... It's just dawned on me that in the three years I've had mine I've opened it a half dozen times but not yet turned it on. My guess: 50Hz = slow games.
Back when I used to follow the Turbo Duo scene rather faithfully, I heard, and believed that there was never a PAL NEC console. Honestly though, I've got absolutely no use for PAL anything, so really didn't pay too much attention.
