It's not gonna work unless he can provide a Japanese home addresse + land line number. And I'm 99% sure he would need a visa as well.. I've always had friends buy mine for these reasons.

One answer; nope. Check out bmobile though.

Well, I bought one and I put down my friend's address and phone number as a point of contact (Japanese friend).

Someone else I knew, last month, bought a phone (with sim inside) from Narita airport; holiday visa.

Ok, seems they are easier at narita/Tokyo than in Kyoto. Still, the address/phone number thing..

Hi guys, I just got a prepaid card+phone at Narita, took a while to go through all the papework and somehow texting and mail doesnt seem to work yet.

I showed my passport and provided my home address and phone number and my jpn address and phone number and that was it, much easier this time.

I guess for prepaid cards and phones Narita is the way to go.

btw I have free mobile tv, has awesome quality, way better than the paid one I get at home

    *Ahem*

    I told you so ;-)

They're just not used to it in the larger stores, but staff at Narita are much more used to it/briefed a bit better.

Anyway, nice one. Dunno why mail isn't working... PM me and I can test it if you like. You need to top up before you can receive any mail.

You need to activate mail by calling the 1400 (or something similar) number that you also use for putting credit on your account. If in doubt walk into a random store and ask an employee to do it for you. Texting(to numbers) only works within your provider, in case you didn't know.
