You know, when we talk about video quality and HDTVs, we never really talk about how far away we sit, which makes a bit of a difference with how you see the screen. Take this as an example: I just moved my HDTV from my dresser about 3 feet away to a stand about 7-8 feet away, and played the Wii for a little bit (Widescreen, with 480p enabled and with a component cable). Normally, I would see ghosting and various jaggies from my perspective. Now, I can barely see the ghosting or the jaggies as much, since I am sitting farther away (Before, I had to lower my sharpness so it would look OK). In my opinion, it made Sonic and the Secret Rings look a bit better then it was on my dresser. Thats not to mention other factors as well, such as eyesight and if you wear glasses/contact lenses or not. Does anyone else have simularities with their TVs?
I sit about 4-5 metres away from my 42" panel. And you know what? I hardly notice any artifact at all... ^+++^
20" and i sit 'bout 5-6 feet away, text in dead rising is literally impossible to read though lol Ryan
I think I recall reading that you shouldn't be sitting closer than 6ft away from the screen anyway, due to possible eye strain. I sit about that far away and it's perfect!
I'm pretty sure this derives from the refresh rate of CRT tv's, so modern lcd/plasma sets may not have this issue although I may be wrong.
That is what it used to be, but now it is more oriented towards picture clarity/quality. With larger screens, sitting too close allows you to see the "screen door effect" which you wouldn't see at a greater distance.
I've recently been playing games where 1 pixel means life or death, so it's about a foot away for me. Arcade style...w/o the cab (or noise, smoke, or vending machines either).
I'm at a little over 6' w/ a 50" screen. It looks pretty good, but my non-progressive PS2 looks a bit jaggie.
About 2 or 3 feet from about 20" screens. Ussually LCD. The whole bad for your eyes is bullshit unless you are watching a CRT really close up for along time.
Or watching a small screen from a long distance. That also causes eye-strain (according to my TV manual, but this is a big TV)
2ft from my 15in LCD in my office (hopefully soon to be 26in  ) 7-8ft from my 36in crt pixel-plus 100hz tv
