One of my favorite RPG series as a child was the Phantasy Star series. I absolutely loved and spent HOURS playing those games. The last one I finished was IV: End of the Millennium and moved on. I later found out that they made one for DC and then later for PS2/XBOX with online. But from what I saw in pictures and such that it took such a drastic turn from previous PS games that I was turned off by it. I bought the Sega Collection for PS2 (over 20 SEGA classics) and I still enjoy playing all of the games on there, including Phantasy Star (even though I still have my Genesis and some games left...I fear they no longer work :-() Did anyone else love this series? I'd like to see them maybe make a sequel following the events of IV (however, I think that was technically the final chapter in that line of the series?) but upgraded and modern. Work with a similar style to the old games but just not be 16-bit (or...perhaps maybe it should?) Another series I enjoyed was Shining Force...but that's another thread altogether
I got the remakes of the first 3 games for the GBA. PS1 is really fun old school dungeon crawling. PS2 is good, I wish dungeons were still in 3-d though. I tried to like PS3, but it bored the CRAP out of me. I dunno, I might like it if I try it again. PS4 looks awesome, but I never got to play it. One day I might get a Genesis for it. Or emulate it.
I love PS IV. It was the first one of the series that I played (long after it came out) and it totally sucked me in. The setting is great and so are the boss fights. It was so exciting to figure out the technique combinations. In short: one of my best gaming experiences. Later I played a bit of I, II and III of which I enjoyed the second one but never got to finish it.
I miss PS 1-4 as well, although i dont miss paying a bit over 100 bucks us for 4 when it was released, how stupid. (not kidding, and at a major game retailer too [EB])
Phantasy Star On-line for the Dreamcast and Game Cube etc, is pretty much just phantasy Star in Name to be honest. Smashing games though, especially Ver.2! Yakumo
You don't have a Genesis?? I want to play through PS2 but it's pretty dated for nowadays. PSO was so fucking fun in it's day though. Man that was awesome.
My brother had one. Took it when he "moved" out. He had a Sega CD and a 32X on it, too. He said he'd let me buy all of it from him, but ONLY for what he paid for it all combined. So, $500 something. Actually, it might have been more than that.
Get the Phantasy Star Collection on the PS2. All 4 games (including English text), near-perfectly emulated (including the audio), FM sound for the first game, and some features to skip video frames (but not audio). the Game Gear games are there too, but not in English.
Sadly I got around to PS years toolate and the dated graphics really turned me off. The very metallic sound of the MD was not my favorite either.
Sega Collection for PS2 has perfect emulation, but lacks PS1 sadly. 3 is like the black sheep of the series really...but still fun. I loved the generation system and choice paths. II and IV are by far the best in the series, with IV being the absolute best. The characters were awesome! Rune, Alys, Raja, etc....gah I miss those days...I still play it on my PS3 on occasion
If you're only a fan of the turn-based RPG gameplay, then Phantasy Star Online and Universe have nothing to offer you. But if the narrative is what brought you in, it's worth checking out PSO just to see how the story got wrapped up. It's not really PS5, but it is a drawn-out gaiden story that takes care of a lot of the loose ends in the story of how Dark Falz is defeated. I must be the only fan of PSO Episode 3, which is turn based but uses cards for inventory and actions. It's essentially a YuGiOh ripoff based on the Phantasy Star world. It relates less to the classic PS world, but it does posit that the survivors of Algol are now in conflict with each other. Political intrigue that was only hinted at in episodes 1 and 2 is played out explicitly in episode 3.
