    Hello

sorry if this has been asked before but just wanted a bit of tech knowledge.

My xbox keeps overheating 3 red lights its done it 4 times in a week I keep removing the heat sink, new paste, tighten bolts etc

I would be happy to remove the dvd drive and run it externally and add an auxiliary fan to sit in its place.

So just wanted to ask if I could simply splice in a new fan into the current fan power connector or will this overload it?

I have exactly £0.00 to spend on this knackered xbox but have extension cables for the external drive mod and have an old fan that I could drop inside.

It may not work but at the moment the thing is dead anyway

any help is appreciated thanks

    Rob

Not sure about splicing in to the current fan, but I do know you can cut in to the dvd drive cable, and use that to power a fan and your drive.

    Thanks again

Overheating does not cause RROD. Also, a reball would not help over heating.

These are all unrelated (or only loosely related).

If you are getting RROD, you need a reball. It isn't heat. The cause is lead free solder being brittle and slightly movements with heat/cooling cycles. This will eventually cause the solder ball to break and the connection fail.

An overheating xbox gives 2 red lights. 3 is a hardware failure.

okay I was told 3 was overheating but I guess it needs re-soldering then. I have put the fan in piggybacked into the regular fan and its all good for now. If and when it goes again I will get it sorted.

    Thanks guys

Fun fact: adding additional fans can easily RAISE the temperature of what you are trying to cool. The mobo in my desktop has an optional fan for the Northbridge with strict instructions to use it only if you are water cooling the CPU or are using passive cooling.

One day I put it on with my fan based CPU cooling setup. The temp jumped 3°C.

3rrod is not overheating 2 rrod is overheating you are beyond overheating your xbox has problems and needs a reflow or reball adding a fan now wouldnt do much without a reflow\reball. If you are comfortable soldering there are many points to draw power from on the xbox 360 there are a few 12v spots on the under part of the psu connection. The xbox 360 will be fine you can splice from previous fan or disk drive wires to. go on youtube an dlook at what people have added to there xboxs multiple fans leds temperature guages and more

i would reball before doing anything else. if you reball you wont need extra fans the leadd solder you put in would last years longer than an xbox 360 lasts now:)

    2 red lights is overheating.
3 is a hardware failure (most of the time it is a lifted / cracked BGA ball).

Reball it with leaded solder and or upgrade the GPU heatsink to the one with the added heatpipe.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I don't have a soldering iron and to be honest I would probably break it if I started messing with solder. Its working right now so it will probably last at least a day or two. It has the heatsink with the added heat pipe already.

I am a little annoyed with the XBOX 360 on the whole as I have had at least 5 machines that have broken with various RROD problems. I understand they are getting a bit old now but I do not have a lot of money so it seems like a bit of a money pit to be continually repairing it, paying for parts, paying someone to fix it etc if I can fudge this one so it works every now and then I will be happy for now.

Sell all the parts you have and buy either a Jasper or ideally a 360 Slim. I haven't heard of one Jasper that has suffered RROD apart from when It's been kept in the worst possible conditions.

Jaspers can RROD, as the underlying problem is not fixed. However, they are much better than the other models.

Slim would be your best bet, the CPU and GPU are combined and are right in the corner of the board. In this spot, any flexing of the board is having the least impact on the chip/solder balls.
