Hello, This may seem like an odd question, but I rebuilt my home theater setup today, and when fiddling with the settings I set the screen mode back to normal. My question is however, the PS3 when on XMB and Blu-rays listed w/ aspect ratio of 1.85:1 fill the screen (i.e sherlock holmes). When I put in a Blu-ray that says aspect ratio of 2.39:1 (i.e Ratatouille, Blade Runner Final Cut, 30 Days of Night, etc...) I get the normal letter boxing, but also get pillar boxes on the sides as well. Of course I can set it to Wide mode, in which everything will fill the screen except for the letter boxing. The same thing also happens with all DVDs. Is that normal, and just something I'll have to live with to see stuff in the right ratio, or is there some odd setting I'm missing on the ps3 or what? Or because my TV of course doesn't support 2.4:1 ratio, does it just say fuck it and display it as 4:3, and then stretching it gets it back to the proper ratio? Thanks, Tim
For the DVDs, yeah, that's "anamorphic" widescreen in a nutshell. Essentially, all DVD video is encoded to 4:3 on the disc, so for widescreen content there's loads of vertical resolution spare. Anamorphic widescreen basically fills the 4:3 frame and then the hardware adjusts it back to the correct aspect ratio. The only aspect ratio Blu-ray supports is 16:9. Content with any other aspect ratio has to have hard-coded black bars in the video. As for what's happening with your set, I don't know. What kind of signal does the set think it's receiving?
Okay, I thought that might be the case for the DVDs. So I'll just have to switch to Wide mode when playing them. I'll check on the mode when I get home. Thanks
The ps3 in XMB is shown as 1280x720, and when you play a DVD it just shows it as 720P. It's a bit of an older 720P set.
As I'm sure you're aware, both of those resolutions are the same, so for some reason it's just detecting the aspect ratio incorrectly (if I'm following this right). It is a little odd, but I wouldn't worry about it unless it's causing problems.
Yeah, i just decided to leave it on wide mode, doesn't seem to cause any clipping or anything when it does detect the AR properly thanks
