Well okay, I didn't know which place to post this. But while messing around with a demo version of Gran Turismo 2 I decided to look into the actual disk image. While exploring there's various .exe files for each demo and a few others. I found this weird, .exe files on a PS1 disk? Well I tried running them to no avail due to a x64 OS, and tried running them in a VM but nothing but black CMD boxes came up for a split second. Just curious if anyone knew anything about these? I saw GT2.exe first as it was what I was mainly interested in on the disc. I was wondering if there was any way of digging deeper into these? Maybe discovering even more hidden stuff? I can host files on demand. (I guess this counts as unreleased as it's a demo disc with a bunch of beta content on various games) Pics as follows: If this thread ends up being useless I'm sorry :c
Don't forget game consoles are computers themselves It sounds like you're thinking since they're .exe files that they would be something openable on a PC, unless I'm mistaken. Lots of PSX games had EXE files that executed the game program on the system, so this isn't anything peculiar.
It's best to keep on experimenting in a VM enviorment, because ther have been multple instantes where a virus accidetly fo d its way onto pressed discs. Ps the "debug" folder interests me
I checked a few retail games on PS1 and none of them have .exe files within. .exe files are a Windows executable extension and AFAIK, the PS1 doesn't run Windows. lol
Typical Windows user thinking. Also, wrong. Windows executables end in .exe (unless you rename them), but not every file ending in .exe has to be a Windows executable. In this case, you've come across some executables for the Playstation that just happen to end in exe. The PS doesn't care about filename extension, you can name them however you like.
Just checked the demo myself. It appears that I don't really see any hidden things. The demos may contain hidden stuff within the files though. As for the Debug folder, it contains a ".MAP" which maps out the entire executable of the one in the debug folder. However, I just executed the file and got this: Looks like a debugging tool for viewing the code and registers at breakpoints.
Because I don't have a conventional antivirus. But it removes viruses on demand lol. And sorry if this thread is useless, I've just never seen exe's on PS1 discs before so this was all kinda new to me.
yes, I have actually used it. I have worked in IT for 15+ years too, if that helps. They even go to great lengths to not mention viruses on their site. You shouldnt just use malwarebytes as your anti virus. They even say "anti virus alone is not enough" on their own website- as in you should be using both.
You can hold shift, right click, open command window here to stop it from closing automatically, run the program and see if it prints anything.
Also note that when building a Playstation disc, you can choose to simply put your main application as "PSX.EXE", which the PS1 then loads. Negating the need to do the whole "let's think of a name like SCXY_123.45 and then name our game like that and then edit SYSTEM.CNF to put the name of the first file in there and then add both o fthose to the disc" thing.
Well thanks everyone! Turns out I'm just stupid lol. Wouldn't be the first time :V Also about the EPSXE thing, I mainly use psxfin. Anyways thanks, lets let my stupidity die now lol.
