So I write quite a bit. Nothing I care to share with many people, just a bit of poetry and short stories. I have just come to realize that a very good friend of mine has plagiarized some of my work and claimed that it is her own to impress some guy..

I'm pretty pissed right now that she would do such a thing. Unfortunately my intel on this also does not allow me to confront her as it was not exactly gained in a trustful manner. Feel bad having acquired the info in such a dishonest manner though.

No advice or sympathy is required. I just needed to type this all out and vent lest I get so pissed that I explode at her..

Shitty. As they say plagiarism is the most sincere form of admiration.

Just be happy it wasn't done commercially.

I'd go all Larry David on her and confront her. If you still plan to be friends with her I don't think you can possibly hold it in for the rest of your life after all :p

How friendly are you with this girl? As in, would it break her heart to bring this to her attention?

If she did it just to impress some dude maybe you should just let it go, unless this really offends you.

That why you always poison the well. Watermarking with images, adding identifying code to binaries to prevent leaks, its all the same. Money talks. Although its a good thing this isn't commercial like ASSEMbler pointed out, the second money is involved you can't really trust or leave anything (or anyone) to chance. If your work was good enough to steal, I bet it would be worth money to someone.

I'd say, if it's plausible, is to make sure the respective guy is aware of the situation.

If only there was any money in publishing poetry..

We've been friends since we were 11 years old. She's the closest person I have ever had in my life and we've been through some awful times and made it this far. I'm not going to say anything to her, but I'm afraid that my trust in her will be burned for quite some time to come. We've shared writings with each other for as long as I can remember and she is literally the only person that I have ever trusted to borrow and read entire volumes of works..

It's just a blow to my mind that such a thing could ever happen.

Pfft, how much of a true friend can someone be to go behind your back like this. Regardless of your history I would find it hard to not mention it at all. You have nothing to be scared of after all, she's completely at fault, and if she got completely mad at you and ended up cutting off her relationship with you over her own mistake, well then, all I can say is that's some "friend" you got there...

I myself love to write and hope some day to write screenplays and must say someone stealing your work is the biggest pain ever. Watch the first season of californication and you will see what I mean.

It's even worse when shes using your work to impress someone else and calling it her own. Though I suppose if it was a guy using you stuff to impress some girl it be worse. Food for thought

While I could never condone someone, especially someone close to you, plagiarising your work, it seems as though you've invaded this girl's privacy to obtain this information? Did you hack into her email? Read her MSN/IRC logs? Keylog her?

When you say that you "have just come to realize", it seems to indicate that you didn't go looking for evidence, just stumbled across it while reading someone else's not so confidential correspondence. Just because you've found this out goes no way toward justifying you violating her trust, even though she's violated yours. I don't think it's possible to quantify or pass judgment on who's done worse by the other, but don't try to play the victim here, you're both just as much at fault in my opinion.

Right except that she stole my works and I merely read a few of her text messages. We fel asleep on the couch and she got a text that was plainly visible for me to see and once it piqued my interest and I unlocked her phone that's when I found this out.

No hacking, no key logging, no paying an industrial spy to keep tabs on her. I just read a message that was right in front of me.

And then unlocking the phone and reading the other messages. If it message on screen had anything to do with her stealing your work you should of woke her up and said "whats this about?" instead of reading her other private messages now not only are you annoyed you also cant confront her without showing her she cant trust you.

How's her taste in poetry and literature? One possibility for subtle revenge is to start sabotaging her with intentionally bad material.

    1. It's not like she is stabbing you in the back, or in this case the face.
    2. Write more. If you're good at hiding details, maybe you can slip references into your work to the situation. It'd be fun, maybe help you push it all out, and then maybe she'll get the hint if she ever reads them.

Yes yes, I read a few of her messages and I should not have. I feel remorseful as I said earlier. Although I only feel bad because of what I found.. Generally we have unrestricted access to each others phones and computers and all anyway. I feel bad because I read something that I was clearly not meant to see.

Honestly I'm not trying to act as if this is the end of the world or our friendship is over because of this. I just needed to get the words out there so I could move one.

Like I said we've been through worse. This just came as a shock to me is all.
