I wanted to let you guys know, that the Planet Virtual Boy Coding Competition has just started.
It will run for exactly 5 months, then a secret PVB community vote will find the winners. Prizes are as follows:

1st: FlashBoy (USB VB flash cart) #100 (Special edition black cartridge) + PVB Shirt
    2nd: PVB Shirt + Mario's Tennis (J)
    3rd: PVB Shirt

If you are interested, you can find detailed rules and more info in the Competition Forum: http://www.vr32.de/modules/newbb/viewforum.php?forum=8&since=0.

This is the first ever coding competition for the Virtual Boy and in spite of the very small scene, we hope for a lot of participation. It would be cool to see some ASSEMbler members enter . :)

what if you dont have a VB or flash cart to test. is something that is atleast emu acceptable ok?

    -- edit --
this is what i get for not checking the rules first
" Any type of program running on the Virtual Boy or a Virtual Boy emulator is allowed, be it a game, demo, application, emulator, port or anything else."

    -- edit 2 --
    Few questions

    1) Does VB have a bitmap display mode?
    2) Has anybody attempted a fps homebrew game?

    1) yes, commercial and homebrew games usually use(d) bitmaps. there's also something called "direct screen draw", where you directly write to the framebuffer. few games like "red alarm" used that to create wireframe 3d graphics.

    2) not yet. ;)

VB seems really akin to GBA in so many ways (I use to work on gba games).

Yeah by bitmap mode I ment a writable framebuffer vs tilemap mode. :p
Any info on setting one up?

    Neat about no fps yet.

i had the idea to port wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Rise of the Triad ore Duke 3D to it
all sources are free but no coder was around.
all four games would fit perfectly on this machine. that would be a big entry :)

yes, here's two demos by dogp using direct screenbuffer writing, with source included: http://www.vr32.de/modules/games/index.php?type=homebrewn&sec=downloads&id=15

indeed! what the vb really needs, is a good fps. i can't think of any genre, which would be more suited to make use of the vb's 3d capabilities.

Wolf is posible but any of them would be a massive undertaking. (VB is near GBA levels in terms of power).

I personaly think it would be far more fun/efficent to make up a new FPS for VB insted since you can customise it around the VBs strengths.

A FPS or a racing game would be a good addition to the Virtual Boy. However those games are more complex than a simple puzzle game. I think the VB community is too small. I mean no complex homebrewn 3D wireframe demos exist, so we should stop dreaming ;-)

Should be easy enough to port some of the 8bit 3D Famicom games over to the VB surely? Highway Star / Rad Racer would be a fun one to do. :)

We need a Mario Kart style game. That would have ruled.

There is a proto for a car racing game, but it is only a rolling demo/proof of concept.

erm. I was researching the demo and to build something looks simple enough but =/ I would not find it worth my time unless I did something complex and I've yet to have the time to try a raycast demo. I'm still toying with the idea still (I love VB, wish I still had mine, damn stupid brother).

Tonight the first Planet Virtual Boy Coding Compeition ended. We got a total of 6 entries -more than one would expect for a VB coding competition- including some real gems! Within the next week, a secret community vote will find the 3 winners, who will get prices like PVB t-shirts and a special edition FlashBoy cartridge.

Wow, looks fantastic! It's so nice you could organize this.
I don't have a VB too, but just wanted to say hi.

The Mario Cart and vb racing games look like fun! Is there anywhere we can get to try them out in an emulator?
