I was watching on the news yesterday when Panasonic (Matsushita) revealed their latest Viera plasma TV with a whopping screen size of 65v !! Its fucking massive !! and best of all it will cost just under 1 million yen ! Until now the only other 65v plasma is the Sharp Aquos which does have a slightly better screen than the Panasonic Viera but cost 1'300'000 yen. The news program also said that by 2008 65v plasmas will only cost about 320'000 yen !! That's just over 1 months wages. I can't wait for these prices to come.

What sux though (well this is known for older plasma TVs, I'm not sure about recent ones) is that plasmas deteriorate over time and lose picture quality compared to LCDs. Thats one reason why Plasmas have been dropping in price in the US. Unless they are improving the technology behind it to keep it from deteriorating in just a few years.

Well, when I say plasma I don't meanthe old type but the new ones made of different materials. In Japan a Plasma is called Plasma but the new ones which aren't really LCD are called Rekisho Terebi. I think that Rekisho means organic. gaijinPunch will probably know though. Anyway, yeah these new TVs won't die like the old plasmas do.

Yea, apparently that's the future of PDP from what I heard...
still given the half life of current crop of PDP it will be a while before I need to replace it...

I just enjoy what I can afford at the given time... :D

Sharp Aquos is a LCD TV range so its two totaly different things. LCD is more expensive then plasma right now and has been delivering better quality pictures/higher resolutions.

it's not a LCD as you are thinking but the Rekisho screen that I mentioned above. All Japanese companies are now making these TVs as well as phasing out the original plasmas. If you look at the Sharp or Panasonic Japanese sites you'll notice that each of them only have a few new plasma TVs but about 10 new Rekisho TVs.

This is the TV I want.

Do you mean OLED (organic LED's)? they are the current "thing" in smaller displays as they use less power and give a higher quality over TFT based screens.

Unfortunately, they do have a shelf life that is terrible compared to TFT, so you have to weigh up lifespan over quality.

Yeah, thats it but these are sort of like a hybryd of organic LCD and what ever else they've come with. Both Sharp and Panasonic really push the chips that "make up" the actual image so maybe that's also something to concider.

    OMG, 10bit colour depth!

But yeah, not OLED, or else the screen would have a specified service life, like the backlight.

I still think it's OTT, yeah I bet it's a marvel to watch mundane shyte like 24 on, but do most people really spend that much time in front of the TV to warrant buying one?

Dunno im having a hard time finding a tv i want to spend £600-800 on to stick on my wall. I guess its aimed at rich people and those who want home cinemas. . .

Mind you the american market is filled with huge tv screens at cheaper prices compared to us.

Im also pretty sure that the panasonic seems to be a plasma screen unless there is a LCD model but i think i heard that panasonic wont be moving to LCD for large screens at least in the near future so i think we can safely say it is a plasma.

Its also likely the resolution on the plasma doesnt come close to the resolution on the LCD.
