Hi. I'm currently obsessed with platformers mainly retro games before ps2. I want to learn everything there is to learn plus sum. I want to train everyday but I'm just exploring games by googling top platformers. I got a long list of games to try out from the platformer wiki. For now I'm playing prinny psp, mega man nes, crash bandicoot 1 and rayman ps1. I'm thinking about what games I should be taking seriously and others casually. Mario or sonic, what play order?

Here is my to Playlist so far

    Impossible Mission
    Turrican
    Contra
    The Lost Vikings
    Doki Doki Penguin Land
    Door Door
    Trine
    Ratchet & Clank
    Jak and Daxter
    Psychonauts
    Sonic Adventure
    Jumping Flash
    Geograph Seal
    Cocoron
    Bonk's Adventure
    Strider
    Earthworm Jim
    Bionic Commando
    Brain Breaker
    Mega Man
    Metroid
    Adventure Island,
    Dynastic Hero,
    Popful Mail
    Shantae
    Alex Kidd
    Dragon Buster
    Flicky
    Legend of Kage
    Wonder Boy
    Pac-Land
    Yoshi island
    Vectorman
    Ristar
    Dynamite Headdy
    Pulseman
    Umihara Kawase
    Cave Noire (1991)

I realise that some games on this list are not within the limits I mentioned earlier those games I will tackle at a later time.

I am also keen to read up on available literature, tutorials, wiki etc. YouTube can be an amazing resource. I enjoy twitch for the live chat part but not sure who to follow for platformers.

    Looking forward to input, thanks.

I'd suggest Gunstar Heroes, and if I were to pick a Sonic game, I'd go with 2 over Adventure. 3 & Knuckles is great too.

If you're into Disney, Castle of Illusion and Mickey Mania are actually pretty well done games.

Obviously, you should check out the early mascot platformers: 8/16-bit Mario, Sonic, and Bonk games (all of them).
The platformer is such a significant genre, you have plenty of great games to choose from. Just play them as you learn about ones that seem interesting to you. There's certainly no correct order to play the countless platformer games out there.

I agree with everything said above.

As for Mega Man, Mega Man 2 is the best one to start with in my opinion. Mega Man 1 just felt kind of meh to me, but after finishing Mega Man 2 over two dozen times I can solidly say that it's my favourite, with Mega Man X being close behind.

Contra is great, but I prefer Super Contra, but both of them are unfortunately getting pretty expensive for such common games.

Alex Kidd isn't the greatest but it's still fun, and same goes for Yoshi's Island (Super Mario World 2), it was just way too different to the first Super Mario World and the whole gameplay mechanic of having stupid baby Mario was annoying.

Also, you haven't specified whether or not you're emulating. Do you have all these consoles?

Castlevania is a must play. I would start with Castlevania IV for the SNES. One of the best platformers with one of the best soundtracks for the SNES.

Thanks for the info. I am using emulation via lakka.tv(retro arch) on a hummingboard. My current console is a xb360.

Alrighty then, price isn't an issue for you at all. If you do end up enjoying Mega Man you should check out the Xbox Live Arcade ones, they're not too bad.
