A few months back I bought some xbox protos, but I have no way to play them. So what I want to know is what are my options? Are Dev kits the only way to play them, or can I mod a standard unit to do the same thing?
Whether you need a dev/debug kit to run the games depends on whether the protos need 128mb of RAM or not. Even if you upgrade the RAM in a retail console, the experience isn't as smooth as it would be on a dev/debug. So if your protos don't have the larger RAM requirement, then you can run them on a modded xbox just fine.
It is possible to mod a retail xbox to play debug titles with the xdk dash, but it also depends if what you have are genuine debugs or simply games burned onto DVDR, also it is possible to patch most debug titles to play on a modded xbox, but as DP suggested they may only work on a 128mb debug rather than on a stock 64mb xbox.
Alright, looks like I'll be getting a debug system then just to play it safe One other question: debug units don't have any region lockout I assume, but could someone confirm/deny that?
Depends who you ask (and no, dont ask me :110: ) I am also currently compiling a list of known betas/protos etc to see what memory requirements there are for certain debug games, and also which games can be patched for use on retail consoles as well
