If you don't want / need to get another PS2 just to play japanese games, a modchip would be the commom solution. It's what i use to play imports.

But now there's a soft mod solution (memory card required) that seems to work perfectly. I don't know much about it (someone around here, like l_oliveira can be more helpful than i), but just look for Free MC Boot and it's app ESR, and you find what you need.

Yea a modded PS2 is the way to go,I use to have one and it booted my original japanese games flawlessly.

Also Free MCBoot will not boot original japanese games, you would have to rip the game then burn it.Or better yet use Free MCBoot to boot hdd loader.
