This is my first post here, so forgive me for sounding a bit newbish... I have wanted to own one of those big PS2 dev units since seeing it in an early PS2 magazine. But at the moment I'm not a big league programmer by any means, so it would be neat to be able to play my PS/2 games on it as well.... I have my eye on a Japanese DTL-T10000, but from the looks of it there doesn't seem to be any controller or memory card ports..... Can anyone give me a step-by-step on how to play retail games on these things? If it means anything, my game collection are all NTSC-J anyway.
The TOOL has controller+memory card ports on the front panel, near the bottom (since the TOOL case is styled to match the PS2 design, they can be difficult to make out from photos) & yes, retail titles can be played - just search through this forum where the topic's been covered several times (look for dsreset). One thing to aware of with TOOLs that are being shipped long distance, is that they're damned heavy & therefore expensive to ship/a bit more prone to damage in shipping. They can be a bit tempermental to get going, if a card works loose in transit, or something. But check though this forum, there's lots of info already up & folks here with knowledge.
After the TOOL has booted, it displays a network info screen on the attached TV. If you can see this, chances are fairly high that the communication between the PC and PS2 side is working (and at least this part hasn't been damaged on transport). To start a game, insert the media into the drive, then run dsreset 2 180. This command restarts the PS2 side in 2MB TEST MODE; other parameters are allowed, too, but they should not be needed for retail games. Also make sure the system is set to use the DVD drive instead of the emulator; there is an appropriate switch located at the front of the unit behind a black plastic casing, near the bottom of the side panel containing the DVD drive. Its opposite to the 1394/USB ports. Depending on the quality of the media and optical pickup, the disk may take a while to start. Once you are done playing, you can run dsreset 0 0 to restart the PS2 part in development mode (parameters are NULL SPACE NULL, no Ohs). However, when you do this, the network information screen won't automatically show up again; if you want it to, run devtool-opening. Best regards, SilverBull
Run the games in dsedb instead of using dsreset, you'll miss a lot of commands otherwise. You can press the blue reset button on the top of the unit instead of typing "reset 0 0".
