I was playing the first wipeout this morning and I notice some of the v in the game is pixilated while others are really clean for a ps1 early release. My question is does anyone know of any ps1 game that had cleanest fmv with no digital blocks happening?
Not to be too pedantic here, but when you say "in-game" do you mean FMV which takes part of an actual gameplay sequence or are you talking about all FMV, intros etc?
Hmm... To me I would say FMV is the preencoded videos on discs not things rendered at the time of play? So its down to who/what encoded it and how much they pushed the bitrate available. I bet that there are some games where they refrained from using too high a bit rate with little EC just incase the CD transport was in too poor of a condition.
RRT4 was quite excellent, there were some compression artefacts but it was a nice FMV to watch and had nice audio to go with it.
Ridge Racer 4 had nice fmvs but there was compression artifacts which was even more apparent on ridge racers for psp. Actually it was sad that when watching it on the psp (as an unlock bonus) namco didn't bother to clean up the video and just ported the playstation video over directly and boy do the artifacts stick out bad on the psp. The chrono cross fmv looks quite nice. Now it's funny I always thought policenaugts fmv looked better on saturn since the saturn versions fmv used a nice 24fps.
Road Rash's FMV looked quite clean. You really have to look when playing it on a CRT for compression artifacts.
The one's I've seen all have some sort of compression. It isn't as bad as the Saturn (god megaman 8 on that thing looks like shit) but the best I've seen are possibly the square games. Specifically FF8 & FF9. FF7 was ok. Doubt Square will clean them up for the PS4 re-re-release
