Howdy! First time poster, please be gentle!

I've read this thread: http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/psone-doesnt-read-discs-despite-working-laser.61845/ and a bit of other stuff on the Interwebs, but haven't found a solution yet.

I'm trying to get an SCPH-1001 to play CDs for music (I'm a hi-fi type, and won't be using the unit for games). I've installed a fresh KSM-440-BAM and a power supply board. The power cord is new, and the fuse is good.

The laser will blink, move, and adjust when the unit is powered on, and the CD will spin. But it does this only when I've got the top cover off and I depress the door switch with my finger. I put the cover back on and the laser just sits there.

So, what should I replace next?

You should make sure the plastic peg on the top lid isn't broken to begin with, no reason it would work with your finger and not the case.....

Yup, I confirmed that the plastic peg isn't broken. I even put a cover from a known-good player on this finicky one, and it still won't play. It's the daftest thing.

Right now I've got a wad of art gum on the door switch, with the cover off, and the player behaves normally. I'm beginning to think there's a bit of slop in the door switch, so it doesn't get fully depressed by the plastic peg. An inelegant, but temporary and effective, fix.

Could be offcourse that there is a bit of dirt in it.
That makes the contact harder too make with the door switch itself then with your finger(or some other tool you use).

It's fixed now and playing music.

The problem was that the top cover did not fit correctly with the new laser assembly, so the plastic peg couldn't reach the door switch.

I shaved down the cover with my Dremel and it all came together correctly.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice.

Or you can remove the cover from the original drive and fit it to the new one.
