I will be Getting a Fat PS2 soon, getting this for free, but wont be any av cable with it.

is there anyone here savvy with ps2 hardware?

would like to know what my options are for an AV mod, other then obviously buying a cable. i don't want to buy a cable as i don't know if the thing will work

are there points on the motherboard / av socket i can tap to pull video and audio from? mainly just to test it and then if it works run it till i get an actual cable.

    RGB / VGA / Composite ?

i've never been big on sony hardware so this will be the first PS2 i've owned, done some googling and didnt find a whole lot of useful information

hmmm didn't come up when i googled i got another link with information that was confusing and generalised with no pin outs.

thanks GodOfHardcore but component wont help me much as tv i'll be using has no component input and dont want to buy a cable for a console that may not work :) i've seen them multi console cables but not sure how good they are quality wise or if they're worth the money vs a single system cable.

    anyway info big help!

also after some more digging via google i came up with this too, seems my 1st effort at google wasnt very successful lol, feel a bit silly now, i should stop doing research while tired and hungover *insert face palm / red face here*

First option is the official ps2/ps3 component cable. Inferior second option is the RGB Scart cable for PS1/PS2/PS3. Inferior third option is the s-video cable. Stay away from composite.

I agree with anyone that said use a component cable- if you're going to buy a cable composhit isn't worth the money.
Oh sorry! I meant composite. Silly me.

EDIT- No component? At least get S-video (if your TV has it)

Any competent built RGB is near guaranteed to work, on the console's end. All retail PS1 and PS2 models worldwide shared one pinout for that.

There were few if any shenanigans other companies pulled like regional changes or disconnecting the signal lines.

I don't know whether it's worth the effort, personally. PlayStation SCART cables are 10 a penny (due to the PS1, the PS2 and the PS3 all using the same connections for AV).

£2.95 doesn't seem unreasonable to me, to save you time especially if you have no idea whether the console works - I don't think it's worthwhile sitting there tearing your hair out over the cable not working, when it could well be the console itself that's not outputting video.

after doing some reading, seems some of the cables have a switch for game / dvd mode but console can be hacked to avoid the need for this

everything will be pal uk and hooked up to a CRT tv thats just got rgb scart and composite input, so component /s-video isnt really viable composite would just be used for a quick test.

also will be using lightgun for lightgun games and some of them need to be connected via a composite connection? not sure why this is or if its essential

    Quick update,

just ordered some resistors, caps and DB9 male + female, going to do a DB9 > scart rgb cable for the PS2 and one for the Dreamcast

i know this defeats the purpose of not buying a cable but hey that would be the sane thing to do :stupid:

If you need pinouts for A/V to SCART for PAL consoles, let me know. My Unity system is using one SCART cable for all consoles so had to find the information a while back to SCART.

thanks :D found that link (1st one) it was very helpful.

Question for you bacteria, on the dreamcast part it recommends pulling 12v to go to pins 8/16 on the scart with a 560r, is there any reason why it doesn't use the 5v pin with a smaller resistor?

also had a quick nose around your site there :cool-new:

its ok mystical, but thanks for the offer, :)

made a cable today, this ones for dreamcast but ps2 one will be similar, for this one i used an old scart cable and a DB9 hacked off an old 56k modem cable, just waiting for resistors and stuff to arrive. only had clear heatshrink and red electrical tape left so it looks a bit off lol.

i will use a new scart cable and new db9 connector for the ps2 one just waiting for them to arrive.
