    Hello,

Is there a way to force my modded PAL Playstation 2 slim to play NTSC games in 480p and not 480i?
In the menu of my HDTV show if a signal is PAL/NTSC or 480/720/1080 p/i.
Testing my majority of the games, my HDTV will display only 480i signal.
Testing Mortal Kombat: Deception (480p supported according to the wiki list) if I choose progressive in the menu, my HDTV will display 480p signal.

    Thanks!

    Use GS Mode Selector:
    http://psx-scene.com/forums/f291/gs-mode-selector-development-feedback-61808/

You can force different resolutions including some never used by games like the VGA modes used in the Linux kit. It is an ELF file so boot it using uLaunchELF.

Keep in mind that some games may not run correctly or at all. Popular games made by ATLUS (such as Persona 3 and 4) require a ATLUS timing fix that was only available in an unreleased beta build of GSM. If you want that fix, ask doctorxyz to release it. I was given the opportunity to test it but only the VGA 640x480p@60Hz mode with the fix set to Test@30Hz mode worked for Persona 3 FES. You only get RGB output and not YPbPr Component in that mode.

I have tested other modes including the normal 480p mode used by games but it just gave a graphical issue at the bottom of the screen. That mode did in fact support YPbPr but again, it had a graphical issue. Without the fix, the game ran at double the speed.

Most of the games I've tried work fine though.

Is that a typo when testing mortal kombat and it still shows 480i?

This is not true. PAL consoles support the same resolutions as the US and Japanese units. In fact, there are PAL games with native 480p support such as Soulcalibur II and Resident Evil 4. Granted the list of PAL games that support 480p natively is much smaller than US and Japanese games...

This list has some PAL games with 480p support: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games_with_alternate_display_modes

I only seem to recall playing Jak & Daxter in 480p and it worked fine (PAL)
Looking at the list it was probably just 16:9 ratio mode not progressive. My bad
It was Burnout 3 (I’ll get it right) that I played in 480p

neomatrix, I agree with what MonkeyBoyJoey said.
If you don't change to 480p from the menu settings (in-game), Mortal Kombat: Deception will be played in 480i even if you using the component cable.

Thats just normal I think, same as the 50/60hz menus, if the TV can’t display 480p and you still want to use component cable how would you turn off progressive scan if you can’t see it.
I still prefer the way you pick progressive in Gamecube by holding B after the logo, not intrusive and simple

There are some PS2 games that have a button combo. It is usually X and triangle or X and O for those titles. But for many, it is just in the screen options.

From what I saw, on my modded consoles PlayStation 2 PAL slim (one is modded with a bad modchip Modbo with 1.99 firmware and the other with a modchip M7 MP-788) using component cable, the progressive mode is disabled by default.
If I test a game that support progressive mode and I don't use the in-game option/s or the combination of the buttons, my consoles will output only 480i (that's what my TV shows in the menu) through my component cable; I think that 480i is widely supported than 480p.
From my point of view that's how it works.
Anyway, my Westwood TV (full HD) will display garbage image even with 480p; I also tested with my Wii PAL with progressive mode enabled and same result.
Sadly my TV doesn't support low resolutions because on 720/1080p (PlayStation 3 PAL) the image is good.
Thank you all for your help.
