I have a PlayStation 2 where the picture freezes from time to time. Sometimes the sound does continue, sometimes not.

The fan is spinning and the exhaust air is cool. So overheat is not a problem.
I removed all unnecessary addons, like harddisk, memory cards, etc. That doesn't solve the problem.

It doesn't matter if I run a game from CD, DVD or HDD. After 10 or 15 minutes the picture freezes. I can reboot the system and after a few minutes it will freeze again.

I wouldn't bother and buy a another PS2. However my model is a Debugging Unit. I would like to repair it.

Does anyone have a clue what could be the issue? Probably power supply?

I doubt it would be a PSU fault but no harm in checking the caps to make sure you are getting clean and stable power..
I'd check the thermal pads on the processors, I'm finding a lot of ps2 HW now where the thermal pads have dried up (so it could be overheating and not blow hit air[poor connection between processor and heatsink).

thats all I could think of that'd cause the fault.. Hope it helps

What model is it? If it's not a DTL-H10000 series, I don't think that the clock generator is at fault. However, these are the classic signs of a cracked solder joint somewhere.

Me and l_Oliveira had come across a couple of SCPH-10000/SCPH-150000 series consoles with a common fault: random freezing with glitchy audio and slow IOP performance. He traced the fault to the IOP clock generator because the IOP and peripherals run off that clock generator. You could still check that generator, but it might not be the fault, expecially if you aren't getting slow IOP performance and glitchy audio.

    My model is a DTL-H30002.

I hope it's not that clock generator. I can solder, but I don't have a steady hand for such tiny pieces.

btw, I've transported the system a few weeks ago. I was at a retro gaming event and took my PS2 with me. It ran there for hours without any problems. However I think I never had it running for such a long time. Probably this long period of activity caused the error or it got damaged during transport back home.

Could you disassembly it and take pictures of the mainboard ?

I dont think AV cables could cause freezes, seems weird
with what you say it definitely looks like a bad solder joints, these are current problem on 360s and PS3s and the fix is to reball/reflow

The problem is that PS2 still used leaded solder and it doesn't even get close to how hot PS3s and 360s get (75C-80C on the CPU and GPU chips). A normal PS2 will shutdown at 70C and will have the red light on the power button blink to indicate it shut down due to thermal.

    thanks again for every feedback.

@ l_oliveira: I'm quite busy so it might take a while until I will disassemble it. Anyway it's a good idea to check the mainboard for bad capacitors or any damaged parts.
