Recently my PS2 has taken up to 3 minutes to load a game, except blue bottom games, which it loads ASA the disk is in. With my air purifiers, I'm not sure if dust would be the problem, but I bet it might be. Any pointers to fix this?
What model is it? Blue bottom discs are CD's. Curiously when the PS2 starts to have problems to read discs, these types of discs are the first to not work. But in your case, it's not reading DVD's, which is weird. Take it to someone (that knows how to fix it) to open and check the lens and the drive controller.
Turn the little star torx on the laser 1/4 turn clockwise. If you suspect dust, an alcohol damp q-tip across the laser surface, followed but the dry side gently across it.
Curiously the same version as mine. Like i already said, find someone that know how to fix it. It can be dust or the drive controller messed up. Also, i'll make a suggestion to anyone that has a PS2. Get an HD + HDLoader. It will keep your drive lens last longer. Games like GTA series, Mercenaries, Star Wars BattleFront 2, and many other resource hogs, simply destroy the low quality ps2 lens, as they load information from the disc the whole time.
If you do this, mark where the screw currently is with a sharpie. If it doesn't work, put it back where you found it.
Hmm...noticed that when fixing it, the disc actually stops spinning for 2 minutes. Need to find a small star torx to turn it 1/4 to see if that works. Tried the alcohol, but that doesn't look like the problem.
You can take a needlenose and grab the side of the torx and turn it that way. You shouldn't need more than one full turn, at the extreme. If it's not close enough to read, you'll hear all kinds of clicking, same for if you overturn. Usually 1/2 turn does it. As to marking it, its so damn tiny, I didn't even suggest. You could try a very fine sharpie I suppose.
Funny, I was just reading up sci.electronics.repair for some pointers to fixing the dodgy laser pickup on my Sony CD changer and the general consensus is that adjusting laser power generally isn't advisable, nor is it the solution - granted, it solves the symptoms, but if your lens is out of alignment you're not curing the ACTUAL problem.
One of my retail units has a problem with the spindle motor. It won't play CD's at all (it actually smacks the disk against the laser). I doubt you have a similar issue tho, as your disk will still run. I guess you could always do the tradeup. Trade in your PS2 and get a used one from gamestop...
