    Hello.
I was looking around for options as to what I can do with a broke PS2 Slim 70000 that has its laser assembly missing.(It broke I bought another one then starting making low circular scratches on discs so I threw away the whole thing).
Basically what got my attention is that it can use SATA hard drives and therefore I could use slim 2.5" HDDs for it to save space and for their lower noise level. I was wondering if anyone else has done this mod.
By the way I know the PS2 will not be able to take advantage of SATA speeds.
I think it will require a modchip too right? Anyways. Thanks and let me know.

PS2 70000 series have removed IDE interface but the solder points on mobo still exists (they were removed in 90000) series. This product makes use of them.

You can choose to install modchip too, or use FMCB for softmod (but the ide interface should still be soldered to mobo)

as a result your slim ps2 will not be portable with a hanging 2.5 inch drive.

I would prefer a dirt cheap fat ps2 and a hdd inside the case. It is much portable and less prone to accidents in my opinion.

About the SATA speeds, you will get about 10 mb/sec which is faster than DVD drive.

I would still advise a fat PS2 and ethernet adapter, but each to his own.

Modding a 7 series for IDE is not something remotely simple.

Might be. I can't remember the exact model they were removed, and i feel too lazy to check it now. You can't do this mode if IDE solder points aren't on your mobo and the alternative for later models suck.

I was hoping to get some help for it. :tranquillity:

It's not something I want to do right away but I want to do it before the end of the year,

I have done the mod, as you can see from the pictures I posted.

You can use the IDE mod with: Modchip, Swap Magic, FMCB or any mod which allows to load OPL ELF.

I was never able to get it to work with HDLoader. It would keep asking me to forrnat the HDD, but worked perfectly with OPL.

OPL is better anyway, is there anything HDLoader can load that OPL can't?

Actually, there is... a few games don't like the "synchronous" implementation of the CDVDMAN RPC in Open PS2 Loader, which cause them to either not work at all or to work poorly. There's situations where the SIF interface (connection from EE to the IOP) chokes from excessive traffic of data caused by "OPL" CDVDMAN driver. A good example is Kingdom Hearts 2 gummy bear ship missions crash. A patch on EE side of the game program injected by OPL EE core fixes that by slowing down EE side of the RPC server through the insertion of a loop that runs through several thousands of "NOP" instructions which delays the thread every time that RPC is invoked.

But in overall Open PS2 Loader has a way better compativility.
