Does anyone know if there were ever any PlayStation 2 software/games that supported the extended languages that the later PlayStation 2 models supported? Initially, the PlayStation 2 console could support 8 languages: 0 - Japanese 1 - English 2 - French 3 - Spanish 4 - German 5 - Italian 6 - Dutch 7 - Portuguese The SONY PS2SDK's system configuration function allows games to determine the language option set by the user, but it can only contain one of the above values. Later models of the PlayStation 2 console (SCPH-50000 series) could support these extended languages: 8 - Russian 9 - Korean 10 - Traditional Chinese 11 - Simplified Chinese Honestly, I do not know if these languages were only available on consoles with ROM v1.80 and later (see below). If someone has seen a SCPH-50005/6/7/8/9 with ROM v1.70, please let me know! Otherwise, I believe that these models only existed with ROM v1.90. SONY made it so that these extended languages can only be selected on related consoles (i.e. Korean would only be available on Korean sets). Like with Japanese consoles, they will only have two language options: English and the other special language. However, the browsers of these consoles will always set the selected language to English - hence most games would always use English. The late ROM versions (v1.80 and later) had a modification to the Osd2 data (Set by SetOsdConfigParam2), which stores the true language that is selected by the user. I don't believe that SONY would have done that, if they never intended it to be used for something. That being said, has anyone come across any piece of game/software that supported these extended languages? I expect such pieces of software to be somewhat obscure, given that the leaked PS2SDK has no support for such functionality. I don't mean software that was hardcoded to support those languages, but software that can visibly display (based on the user's choice in the browser) either English or the other special language. I have mentioned ROM v1.80 here because it was the first version that I have seen the new Osd2 data in, but retail (CEX) consoles have only either v1.70 or v1.90.
