According to year-end figures provided by Nielsen, it appears that the Sony PlayStation 2 remains the most played video game console, by far. In fact, in terms of "overall usage minutes", the PS2 accounted for just under 32 percent of the total.

Following in the list was the Microsoft Xbox 360 at 17.2 percent and the Nintendo Wii at 13.4 percent. The PlayStation 3 improved to 7.3 percent but somewhat surprisingly, lost to the original Xbox, which managed 9.7 percent of the total.

The PS2's lead diminished significantly from 2007's 42 percent of the total, but understandably so considering Sony has moved all their efforts to the next-gen PS3.

Year-on-year, the PS3 jumped from 2.5 percent to 7.3 percent of the total, the Wii jumped from 5.5 percent to 13.4 percent of the total, and the 360 jumped from 12 percent to 17 percent, all at the expense of the aging set of the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube.

The above didn't surprise me! :banghead:

Yeah, Sony's move to remove the backward compatibility is keeping the PS2 alive even more. Hell, there are some games I still can't play on my PS3 and it has full backwards compatibility, so I still dust off my PS2 occasionally.

Think of the number of PS2's out there. I doubt BC had any impact on this. Maybe a percent or two.

Oh I realize the number of PS2's, however, the fact that the PS3 is no LONGER being made BC should show that many people still love to play their old PS2 games and are still holding strong to the system. It was a dumb move by Sony to take it away, however they still make money off their PS2 so I don't think they care in that aspect. Game sales are game sales.

I think I might need to buy one of those new PS2s, I think my old one has almost kicked the bucket.

I've got 271 video games in my collection, not a lot compared to others here, and 81 of them are PS2. The funny thing is, I stopped buying PS2 games like last year.

I think the ps2 is a good starter console,

I got 1 just to play Battlefield 2 and watch DVDS during which time it worked well. I use to play BF2 on PC's and decide see weather I'd like a console as much as I liked game play on the computer. I found out I don't, I'am even worse with controllers than I'am with a mouse, I guess that settled that.

It served it's purpose well. It was kinda funny cause it was my first console. I had at that time also want to take a peek at the hardware inside, that was kinda interesting one that I'am glad I didn't miss.

So I guess there plenty of reasons to get a ps2 even now, specialy with the wide game & movie selection still on the market.

    What me didn't surprise:

    27million 360 having more playing-minutes than 45million Wii... (vgchartz)
For me, it shows just what many people are talking about: The Wii is the most overhyped, overrated and overpriced (mass-)hardware of all time.

Really? PS2 was your first console? It just seems so strange, though I guess I did have PC before anything else, Commodore 64 at least. PS2 was kind of fun to poke around in, I got one free because of all the DRE's.

Wii is pretty fun when the game is good, the problem is that the majority of the games just aren't worth playing. I like mine but I wish something amazing would come out. I'm hoping The Conduit is that game!

What exactly are people still playing on PS2? There are plenty of good games for it, but most of them aren't very mainstream. I would imagine most people are playing crappy sports games or something.

    PhreQuencYViii,

If I buy consoles its only cause I'am ready to throw some money around.

They might sit there for quite awhile before I decide to do something with them.

At some point I will be tickled pink to look inside them. :love2:

But they could sit there for weeks and or months.
