Hi My brother has an old CRT PC monitor and is adamant in wanting to connect his PS2 up to it. What sort of options exist out there for this if any? Thanks. UK based if that's relevant.
There is an official PS2 VGA Cable but it uses RGsB (Sync-on-Green) and is software-controlled, meaning many games won't work with it. On top of that, a lot of VGA monitors do not support RGsB. The PS2 can be modded for standard RGBHV (VGA) but it requires both a hardware mod (tap H-Sync and V-Sync after it leaves the DAC) and a soft mod or modchip. If you don't want to modify the console, it would be best to use a YPbPr Component Video to VGA converter and a good PS2 Component cable. It is best to use the PS2 on an HDTV with Component cables since the system can go as high as 1080i, which many CRT PC monitors will not do over VGA. OzOnE's universal HDMI mod board should be out in December. It should work with the PS2. It bypasses the DAC and taps directly into the system's Digital AV signals, giving a much better picture than Component, VGA, and those cheap PS2 HDMI adapters.
I've been using the PS2 TO HDMI adapter and i'm surprised how decent it is. It's way better than using a cheap quality component cable. On some menus, the screen seem to shake a little bit, but on gameplay it's perfect (at least on the games i tried). Plus, i haven't noticed any input lag.
I guess I'll have to convince him to just use the Component with the HDTV. Seems the best way. Thanks.
Then you might as well invest in a better component cable, unless your TV is the one with a poor upscale/deinterlace circuit. It's more like the default video modes are NTSC and PAL - which most screens don't support via VGA. It's only when there is VGA output, when most of the screens out there (specifically, those with SoG support) will display anything. He can use GSM with his software, but compatibility with software is not 100%. Compatibility won't be 100% anyway, regardless of whether a software or hardware method is made to override the video mode that is selected, as the HSYNC and VSYNC frequencies would chance once the video mode is changed. There are some games that perform some actions, based on the speed and state of the flipping of the field bit (indicates which field is being drawn for the interlaced signal) in the GS CSR. Once progressive scanning is used, that bit never flips, hence these games will break down. Hence the best solution, would be to either invest in a decent signal converter or to use a screen that can support component input. It typically won't do anything beyond 480P with most games, given that it has too little VRAM to make a higher-resolution worthwhile.
I do have a official Sony component cable. Unfortunately, they aren't around anymore (specially down here) so most people are left with the cheap quality ones. The PS2 to HDMI is another option. Not the best, but not the worst either.
Your solution is the new GARO. http://assemblergames.com/l/threads...-transcoder-with-scanliner.58260/#post-834236
