But the PS3 is an awful solution for playing PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 titles.

Though I have only 2 Ps3's ( 2x 40gb that still work) I would rather buy a newer console, instead of buying a launch console, which has a high risk of ylod'ing already, because of the age. But sure, the missing features are a point too.
Is there a ylod'ing statistic of sku models somewhere? Would be interesting, he.

Sony warranty and repair dept probably has those answers. hahah. But they'd never release them unless they had to (like Microsoft had to for the 360). The data would be kinda biased because the newer consoles will always be more reliable. The only way you could really compare is if you compiled YLOD SKUs after a set date. For example you compile data YLOD of every CECHA after 5 years, then compare it to a CECHH after 5 years, ect.

But for PS3s sake I'm 99.9% comfortable in saying anything after a CECHH is well above the electronic industry standard in reliability. Slims and Super Slims are stout consoles and will be running for a long long time.

I have the 20gb launch model with cfw and it runs fine.I did put some new thermal compound on it but that's about it.

If I recall correctly, the initial power supplies were also prone to fail and theres a 2nd revision or something thats better to use in them when replacing.

1st/2nd-run PS3s may also run into more problems reading optical media after heavy use. IIRC, CECHA-CECHF PS3s have single-lens Blu-Ray drives and they tend to weaken out faster than the later double-lens BDs.

It is to be judged console by console. I've seen some die out after only modest use, I've seen others are still going strong after running for 16+ hours a day.

Clean, reball, install high-capacity SSD, CFW + multiMAN, done. :)

I've got good news, it seems the company i purchased the PS3 from have already replaced the thermal paste under the IHS what a bonus! i can't believe how cool this console is running, fan gear 1 at XMB and never past 2 on games! i think this one is gonna last awhile. :)

Indeed you're right there. As i said for me it's my OCD that makes me HAS to have this model. It feels complete and in my brain is the ONLY way sony wanted their console to be. It would be pointless trying to explain how my brain works because no-one would understand, but just know i have the first model PS1 also :D

Yes there is one that is literally hot as a iron so if you need to fix your clothes before work just run your ps3 at morning nip it out of the console and get ironing. The second revision is a lot cooler and warm to the touch not sure what one my console has but judging by what i've seen it's probably the cooler variation.

There's probably a hole dug somewhere full of 60GBs just like the E.T games. lol

I do understand where you're coming from. I have a SCPH-10000 with GH-001 motherboard, though I don't use it for gaming. I'd also like to get myself a SCPH-1000, which I'd more likely use for gaming but I'm very happy with my SCPH-5500 solution once I work it out.

The heat and power output of the original PS3 just put me off. I've owned a 120GB slim, 60GB fat (launch) and now I have a super slim with a 320GB 7200RPM HDD in it and the thing flies, barely makes noise and barely consumes power. Oh well I guess.

I have a 60GB CECHC, which up until last summer, had no problems at all. I had been planning to change the thermal paste for months, but as it was working, I never got round to it.

The first time I tired GT academy, it shut down after a few minutes. Tried another couple of times, and the same thing kept happening. So I changed the thermal paste (only above CPU and GPU), and swapped the fan for a 19 blade. I had wanted to change the paste under the heatspreaders, as well as the thermal pads, but I couldn't remove the PRAM battery and therefore couldn't take off the metal plate. I have also used extension cables to move the HDD outside the console as I didn't like how hot it was getting.

It has been much quieter since then, replacing the fan has made a huge difference. It still turns up a few levels when it is warm, but it is so much quieter than the original. It still refuses to play GT6 and occasionally wont turn on first time, and sometimes it has trouble when switching back into standby. I'm hoping this is a problem with the PSU.

I have bought a super slim to play GT6, but I much prefer the look of the original. Also, it would take forever to download/back up around 900GB of data to move everything over.

You get PS1 on all PS3's, just not PS2. Not worth it imo, early PS3's are very risky.

If there is any game to kill your PS3 it's probably GTA or GT :D The battery is super easy you just pull the cable out from the pcb? don't be afraid to give it a good tug trust me, i have removed several of those and used force with no repercussions.
Kudos on the HDD. It does get way to hot in the HDD bay. If your console is nice and hot on a low fan gear then you got nothing to worry about, because the thermal paste is doing it's job and the PS3 is happy enough with the heat that it doesn't have to up the fan gear.

Yeah 900GB would be insane, I'm currently re-downloading all my PSN content, and my god does it take a long time, even with my internet speed being good it's generally slow and tedious. Plus i HATE the new PSN Store.

I pulled the battery reasonably hard, but I was worried about ripping the connector off the board and breaking it completely. Now I have a backup, I might give it another go. :p

The fan does generally stay low, though I would still like to replace the paste under the heat spreaders. I dread to think what it must look like :/

The new store would be so much better if it didn't freeze half the time I try and use it. I have had PS+ from when it first came out, so I have about 1300 items on my download list. Is it really that hard for the download list to be split into categories? :/
