Hey all, I Picked up an SCPH-5552 at a carboot sale, I noticed it had some electical tape on it's underside so figured it may have been modchipped, I was gonna swap out the modchip for a MM3 but when I tested it, it booted original anti modchip games like Final Fantasy 8 and 9, so then I burnt some unpatched backups of the following anti modchip games, Final Fantasy 8 and 9, Dino Crisis and Legend of Dragoon, All the backups also booted without issue so I got very confused, anyway I desoldered the chip, put it in my pic programmer and read it, the hex is here https://www.sendspace.com/file/9efpjg I also made a video of me testing the system but the audio and video became desynced a bit so it's not the best heh. So does anyone know what this chip is? and why it's booting anti modchip games?
On PAL region, with the latest old crow code, antimodchip NTSC protection of most games don't work. It's ok, nothing weird Plus on some games if the code detect a pal bios it simply turn off.
I don't believe that your dump is complete (not 100% sure); if the chip you dumped from had Code Protect enabled then it wouldn't read back correctly/completely. But I do know I tried a certain hex file (MODC508.hex) on 2 different PS1's and it would boot anti-mod games despite the chip only using 4 wires, so it does exist. The only downside to the one I tried is it would delay boot by about 5 seconds before actually booting the game. Edit: I am in an NTSC region.
Thanks for the answers guys, I thought I had stumbled upon some amazing unknown chip for a while there
