I just bought a chipped PS1 and the guy said it was working fine for him but I can't get any games to work right. I've tried several programs, brands of cd-r, and burning speeds but every combination has problems. Some games I can't get past the Playstation logo. Some games lag and have sound issues and some games just act as CDs. I've blew through 20 CD-Rs so far without a perfect burn. I even tried to use CloneCD to make copies of my original games but they just sit at the Playstation logo. Any advice?
If possible, try a PS1 Import. Not a burned import, a real PS1 disc that is not of your region. If it works fine, then maybe it is the modchip. Otherwise it is your CD drive. You could also check the performance of your correct region real discs. If real games have lag or sound issues, it's the CD drive needs calibration, repair, or replacement. If it only happens with CD-Rs, the mod may be at fault for not booting, but if you see the license black logo, then it's not likely the modchip's fault. You also may want to know that modern DVD writers and alot of modern CD-Rs do a poor job quality wise. Particularly CD-Rs. If possible order premium quality CD-Rs like Taiyo Yuden. If not, Sony brand usually works ok for me.
if you can post a picture of the install we might be able to tell you which code is used and go from there.
After playing a retail game for 30 minutes it started playing the CD-Rs perfectly. The system looked brand new so maybe the laser just needed some use before it could read CD-Rs or something or maybe it was from the cold weather during shipment.
Depending on where you live, if the system was really cold you definitely should wait for it to warm up normally. The moving parts don't like winter extreme temperatures, nor do they like summer extreme temperatures either. Glad it is working now. PS1 has alot to offer.
