Only recently I learned the first Playstation already had the ability to hook up two multitaps to play 5 to 8 player games. There aren't many, according to this wiki page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Multitap):
    1–5 Players:
    Bomberman World
    Bomberman Party Edition

    1–8 Players:
    Micro Machines V3
    Micro Maniacs
    Madden NFL 99
    Monopoly

Somewhere I also read Bishi Bashi Special and Street Racer support 8 players?

I'm not entirely sure, but to play an 8 player PS1 game on the PS2, would you need two PS1 multitaps, or can that also be accomplished with two PS2 multitaps?

Next to that, how many PS2 games (aside from all those EA sports stuff) support 5-8 players offline?

And do PS1 multitaps work both on the fat and slim PS2? And does the PS2 'slim' multitap work on the fat PS2?

The Multitap designed for the slim PS2 will not be compatible with the fat PS2, as it has a different form factor.
The same thing goes for the reverse.

Kinda odd that the PS1 multitap supposedly works on both the fat and slim PS2, but the PS2 multitap have a specific fat and slim model!
Or did the PS1 fat and slim also have different multitaps? (I only have slim, and the multitap I have works on both fat and slim PS2 if I recall correctly)

I've never see a PlayStation multitap in real life, so I don't know whether it works the same way or not.
But for the PlayStation 2 multitap, it connects to both the memory card slot and pad port. When SONY made the slimline console, the height of the console (and hence the position of the memory card slots) was reduced and so it became necessary to have a new multitap.

Ah yeah, that's true. And the PS1 multitap is just the controller plug.

Btw, I also read Bishi Bashi supports 8 players. Is that true and how does it work? (is it 8 controllers and human players?)

Multiplayer Bishi Bashi is just 8 players taking turns with two controllers.

The FIFA soccer games support 8 people, not sure which ones but 100% sure I've played one of them with that many people.

If I recall correctly the PS1 multitap could only be used on the PS2 to play PS1 games. If you wanted to play PS2 games with a multitap you would need a PS2 multitap. I don't think the PS2 multitap could be used for PS1 games at all.

Also there was a Mirco Machines style racer which supported 8 players called Supersonic Racers. See the back of the case in this ebay listing.

Wow, great tip on SuperSonic Racers! Weird it seems to be nowhere on any list...

Hmmmz, I can't change the topic title?

I wanted to extend this topic to local LAN games for PS2. So that's 2 tv's, 2 PS2's connected via LAN and 2x the same game disc (like Gamecube Mario Kart Double Dash via broadband adapter).
Does anyone have a list of such games? I once checked some FIFA Soccer and Pro Evolution Soccer games, but they didn't seem to have it (though I read some info online which seem to indicate some versions had it...)
And I think I read Star Wars Battlefront has it.

Info I can find seems to be specific for online play:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_online_games

I think that it is better to start a new thread. It will be easier to find it later as the two subjects aren't exactly the same thing :)

I need to check this at home, this seems to imply that there is a multitap which works with both the fat and slim :O
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/PS2-Multiplayer-Multitap-Controller-Adaptor/dp/B0045RJEG0/

I have that multitap, as well as a Slim and Fat PS2. I know it works with the Slim, but I'm not sure if I ever used it with the Fat...

    @kennypecheur: I'll start a new topic yes.

I just tested Pro Evolution Soccer 6 with 2 multitaps and 8 controllers. Indeed that works as well ;D
That's 1 more player in comparison to the PS3! Or actually 2, since I never got it working with 7 controllers...

And yes, this multitap works both on the fat and slim PS2.
And no, it doesn't work with PS1 games on the PS2 (tried with ISS Pro 2).

Next stop, get another PS1 multitap and one of those 8 player PS1 games and try that on the PS2 :D
Street Racer is on the way, and I should be getting some FIFA games soon.

Darn it. Got an official Sony PS1 multitap from a retro gameshop yesterday, and just discovered it doesn't fit on a slim PS2 :(
My third party one does fit though. What were you thinking Sony! >_<

    EDIT:
Seem to have found a workaround by using an extension cable.

Well, they shrunk the size of the PlayStation 2. In 1993, I'm sure that there was no way for them to have known what their next-generation console model from 2004 would be like.

But the slim PS2 also supports PS1 games and accessoires. So one would think that with the design they would take into account to have the official Sony PS1 accessoires supported, like the multitap. I'm pondering what the function of the extra plastic on the PS1 multitap connector is and if there are other PS1 accessoires that have this...

With testing MicroMachines V3 and MicroManacis 8-player mode I discovered 3 of my dual shock 2 controllers don't work properly anymore :(
At least 8 player mode really works (not sure how much fun it is though, but hopefully find out some day ;) )

We only once got the full compliment for Micromaniacs and it was fun but extremely manic... Would totally recommend it!
