Hi. I've installed mm3 modchip on japanese 5500 console but it boots only japanese originals and backups. Doesn't boot games from other regions. Please help! ray:
Did you make sure your wiring is OK? When you try to boot imports, does it attempt to load them or does it display the "Please insert a PlayStation format disc" message?
Yes I'm sure the wirings are correct. PS attempts to load disc, no error messages are displayed. I made the chip myself from pic 12f508. Actually it's my second attempt to install modchip to Playstation. First one was SCPH-5502 and it was successful, I used same pic with mm3 euro firmware. Yes I'm sure I used japanese firmware. It boots japanese backups! Here's the diagram I used:
The problem is the 12F508 you need to use the 12C508A I have always had issues using the 12F508 for some reason, same problem you are describing.
Hmm... This is a bit unfortunate news for me. Could you share your experience with 12f508 in more detail?
You might want to try the Mayumi 4 or MM2 and give it a try, for some reason I think the MM3 does not support imports on JPN systems. You can always try to use ONEchip to patch the BIOS for imports, only 4 wires.
Any of the C chips work (12C508, 12C508A, 12C509, 12C509A) Its the flash replacements (12Fxxx) that seems to have issues. Its a direct replacement part, so technically it should work - but seems very hit and miss.
I didn't try 12C508A, I don't have any of these. So far it seems it's not 12F issue. Because 12F508 has worked fine on two 5502 boards and 12C509 has given very same result (boots only japanese) on 5500 as 12F508. I'll try other firmwares.
Well it turns out that the BIOS used on the 3000 series an up will not allow imports with any chip. The only thing I can think of is using the onechip code and trying the 4-wire BIOS patch.
Hmm... Here is what I found: http://modchip.aeug.org/compatability.html "Some SCPH-3000 consoles, and all later japanese/asian models, will only boot copies of japanese CDs" And onechip won't help, because the way it works somehow related to 60hz mode and it's not the case with fat models. Btw, I tried mayumi 4.0I and it doesn't work at all, not even boots originals.
find the BIOS chip in the 5500 and wire points 4, 3, - and + http://www.fatcat.co.nz/psx/install/102/diagrams/psone4.jpg using the onechip hex I have the Mayumi 2 and 3, but I do not have the install diagrams. They might work but noway to test it.
It won't help. PSone is different story. That fix is only for pal consoles and it forces to run system in ntsc, somehow it tricks region protection. I patched "Licensed by Sony..." string in disc image to "Inc." and it boots fine. It means console checks this string. Maybe its possible to inject this string at the time of boot process but no known ps1 chip do this as far as I know. Here's some mayumi diagrams: http://marsupilaguy.free.fr/psmod/modchip.htm Mayumi 2 hex is for PIC 16F84
