I know this is off-topic to the forum, but I'm hoping that someone on this site has done this or something similar to it. I have been reading various posts from both searching on the Ubuntu forums (found about 20 posts) and through google searches (made it through 14 pages of search results currently) and have not found a true answer to my questions.

I've been using Linux for about 5 years now and have completely removed Microsoft Products (such as Windows) from my personal life and would like to continue this in my business life also. I'm in the process of opening my own business (first attempt at running my own business) and I don't want to be forced to use either windows operating system or windows applications if at all humanly possible.

The needs for my store are as followed

Cash Registers: I will be selling retail products such as video games, videos, etc so the software that is for resturants won't work for me (which is just about every POS application I have been finding) will need to be able to connect with the cash display pole, cash drawer, receipt printers, barcode scanners, etc and also about to read the information on each products from my website database (MySQL). I will also need to be able to have multiple locations able to search each stores inventory (just planing for future usage.)

Back office computer: This will need to be able to keep track of the sales, and refunds for the day (could read this data from the register setup) and also be used for the book keeping and accounting data. I will be using the OOo package for all the office document stuff like spreadsheets, etc. This will also be needed for employee scheduling etc.

I'm looking forward to all the information anyone can provide me on this because the normal way of google searching doesn't seem to be working for this.

    Thanks, in advance
    James

I used to sell PoS equipment when I first left school. I'd buy up older units from larger stores, do them up and sell them onto smaller outlets. Not been involved in that for almost 20 years now however and things have moved on a loooonnnnggggg way!

Sadly, this is for Windows, but it is completely free software developed by retailers for retailers. Will cope with £/E/$. http://www.proffittcenter.org/Home.html

Hope you find the information you require and best of luck with the business. I'll keep looking for non-MS related software for you when I have the time.

These guys offer all the software you require in Linux, but I bet they are not cheap! http://www.merchanttechnologies.com/mtpos/retail-solutions.php

well I'm sure the basics are still there just some of the hardware changed. I have found quite a few packages but they are seem to be for resturants and not general retail. I would appreciate any information that I could use to push me in the correct direction. I really don't want to start the shop with a generic register that I can find for like $100 and have those tiny thin receipts like you see at flea markets (does not look professional at all). I'm waiting for my register parts to come in the mail from UPS. I ordered the barcode scanner, Cash Display Pole, and Cash Drawer all are USB based and the machines I plan to use for the POS registers have 5 USB ports on them but no ps2 ports.

I'll look forward to any further information

there is only 2 Microsoft products I still use and I don't count them because no viruses for them like all the rest of their stuff. I still use both the xbox and xbox360 and don't plan to let them go anything soon. but for computer operation systems I use Ubuntu Linux or my OSX x86 install

yeah when i was working at autozone we called them the other term for POS on daily basis because they always crashed but i'm 100% sure it was the Neoware client terminal machines that was the problem.
