Pokemon X and Y - Shiny Pokemon changes?

So I have Pokemon Y and I'm loving it so far. I don't have many hours on the game. I only have 1 badge. But I already saw a shiny Pancham! I've read a lot online about people finding a lot of shinies in this generation. I've spent hours creeping through the tall grass, but he's the only shiny I've seen so far. Do you guys have any advice on how to improve odds of finding them?

 

My only bit of advice is to tip a lot and run into a butt load of hoard battles.

 

I've got over 50 hours on the game and have yet to find a shiny.
