Polarity of these electrolytic capacitors?

    Hi all,

I'm a long time lurker and this is my 1st time posting, so hello, hello my fellow obscure video game enthusiasts!
I recently bought a couple of 'junk' Sega game gear's from a dutch Craigslist and started to replace the caps.
I didn't have all the right ones so I went over to my municipality 'junkyard' and salvaged a VCR and a DVD/HDD recorder for parts.

But now I'm in doubt about these caps and their polarity so maybe you can help me out? :)

Is the red side negative? I think it shows a minus as well but I'm not sure.

On the PCB there's an N printed on the 'red' side so I'm assuming this is N for negative.

The other Caps all have - on their sides - and + on printed on the PCB hence my confusion.

    Thanks for reading.

White stripe is negative on those black ones (standard)
the red ones idk because I don't think I've ever seen caps like that. I'd assembly the writing along the side doubles as the negative stipe..

    Yup, still a negative stripe.

Don't be a cheapskate, though - buy new ones. You don't want to replace old caps with old caps. Those 10uF 16V caps are all of 15 pence (0.20 Euros) each. In fact, they're about 8 cents in the US.

Thanks guys. About being cheap.. I'm Dutch! ;)

I used to have 2 electronics shops in my hometown where they sold every component you can think of per piece but they all went bust. Now I'm left with mail order and I only needed a couple caps and I didn't want to wait.

    Aha! Thanks for the clarification.

There is a special type of electrolytic capacitors for AC use, which is designed to withstand reverse polarisation. This type is called the non-polarized or NP type.

The N stands for non polarized and not Negative, duh.

Ahh, I was looking at that as a Z! lol. Of course it is.

I've posted a list of distributors as a sticky... uhh, somewhere! Any of the big boys should sort you out with next day shipping. Much easier than having to crack it open again when your replacements fail. A good rule is that capacitors have usually had it after about 7 years. When was the last VCR made? I'm thinking these are ooold capacitors.

The white stripe is neg like the others but the other caps are N non polarized on the cap also should have the N in a circle . Most old audio circuit and speakers will use them.

Like the others say new and quality is the way to go.
