Never heard of this game until mr.casual talked about it. first , i thought it was a flash with a monster that pop-up after a while , like our ''friend '' paulo, makes us watch . ( :smt043 , thats a joke man.) anyway, i've searched this game on google... and heard alot of strange things about it....this that are strange , scary and mythic. what are your opinions about that legend. personally , i don't know if i belive it .... but it still scare me. i'm not really the type to be scared for nothing.... but this is really Strange and misterious..... while searching for this tittle , i've found alot of theories and hoaxes...i've found some weird things too...like that BETA-7 sega story (wich i don't belive.) anyway, what are yours opinions about that? complete fake? urban legend? true? do you have any informations...or good links ? thx.
i would say fake too.... but i know certain type of images can do special things on the mind... and that was prooved. a game like this ( the men-in-black or amry in this is fake , sure) could exist. some types of images animations, by exemple , can make you fall inconscious , epilepsia , motion sickness, troubles with mind,... that could exist, if made corectly and proprelly. that's the scary part. fuck those , military conspiracy or something, that's just shit... but the game itself could exist.. maybe not on the form of ''polybius'' and not as incrdible as it look like. did you heard of the pokemon tv show in japan?
There's a Rom for it somewhere, i think. Play at your own risk. There was an article about it in a video game magazine, "supposedly, some business owner had it in his building, and when kids played it, they said they had terrible nightmares, and men in black came but never took money out of the machine, only "data". The article was inconclusive, however, since no one could find any real proof.
In all probability, an urban legend with some semblence of truth. Certain flashing lights can make epileptics go into seizures, high or low feq sound can cause people to get headaches, stuff like that. Something like this is problably what originally happened and the urban legend grew around it. I remeber seeing a title screen for Polybus in a magazine somewhere, maybe EGM. So I beleive the game at least is real.
i think the game could exist too. as you said , with certain lights or animations and sound at low frequences, moving backrounds and things like that can make you feel strange things, that's true. But a ''hype'' was developed around the game , lies where added to make the story better, stuff like that. Theres articles about the game in gamepro and EGM. a rumour say there's an article of it in a New York times of 97 (or something like that.) . here's the famous tittle screen found. but take a look at the the name of the compagny, Sinneslochen (or something like that) , wich, traducted in english make: Lost-Senses (or something like that.) which would make the screen a bit unbelivable. i saw a photo of the arcade itself , too. again, fake or not? those two pictures can be fake, but the story (without all those military stories) is belivable . edit: here: doesn't look photoshoped to me, but can still be a fake. the strangest thing about this picture is that the game was made in 81, and the picture look like one of the 50.
I think the marquee (ie "Polybius" text) on that machine looks a bit *too* much like the logo in the screenshot. I think they Photoshopped it in and maybe made the picture a bit more grainy to make it look more realistic. By the way, shouldn't it be possible to look up "Sinneslochen" (sp) in some chambre of commerce database? Oh and I also remember reading a forum thread with someone who claimed to have played the game, and clawed himself in his nightmares :O
Confirmed , the picture of the arcade is fake. and i can say you with which program it was made, and is version. Adobe Photoshop 7. im sure about it. i can tell you the exact date too: 2004/01//26 at 22:22:56. i can't be more exact. :smt043 im laughing , but that's still true.
I want to believe!! :smt022 The really creepy thing about the more complete Polybius stories is that they all place the location of the cabinet(s, varying in number from 1-6) as in small suburbs of Portland, Oregon - just a few hours drive from where I live.
Time for some groundbreaking journalism then, drive over and ask some long-running arcade operators ;-)
that would be really cool! anyway, to know if the picutre is fake , simple: -save it on your desktop, -click on it with the right button, -go to propriety, -make the file to open with word -open the file. Voila! in the code you can clearly see the name of the sofware used and the date it was made. :smt045 it's a bit sad , though..... :-( i've tried it with the opening screen...but found nothing.... so, that could be real. (i know some software don't mark the picture , but they aren't that common. )
Does anybody have the ROM dump? There was one, supposedly, but it crashed after the title screen (how convenient)
Utter arse! Found an interesting insight into the game here: http://www.solidsharkey.com/polybius.html Everyone on the net seems to have that same title screen, nothing else. *edit* Boy am I bored! Found what claims to be the game and emulator here: http://www.gooddealgames.com/articles/Polybius/polybius.exe Dunno if the link works, or if its a virus/spyware/whatever as im in work and can't download it. Download/click at your own risk!
Don't bother with the download, it's just the Polybius title screen as shown above that flashes in funky colors and plays some annoying arcade-like noises, then closes with an "April Fools" message. Regardless of how much truth there is in the Polybius legend, this is a total hoax.
