Hello! I'm looking for a site-list or timeline regarding pong/dedicated consoles launched in Japan. Anyone?
With the exception of the Nintendo consoles which used a Mitsubishi developed chip most consoles were either rebadged US/HK consoles or used the standard AY-3-85xx, MM-57xxx or SN-764xx chipsets. I do have a Japanese book which does have a number of pong consoles listed, will dig it out and see if there is anything different.
I have some of the more famous ones listed (Bandai, Tomy, Nintendo, Epoch, etc): http://www.japan-games.com/MasterList/ But that's by no means even close to a complete list. If you want to see more in terms of total consoles you should check out: http://www.pong-picture-page.de/
Isn't that a sound chip, as used in the SMS, Coleco, BBC Micro etc? Or is it just a strange coincidence? I'd actually be interested in reading some more about the variations in Pong unit hardware, if there's a website or whatever.
The AY-3-85xx, SN-764xx chips were the model numbers of a number of chips including sound chips, pong chips, tone demodulators and various other things. www.pong-story.com has a number of chips listed. It's interesting to note that the GI AY pong chip was designed and created in Scotland but no one seems to know the two designers who made the chip and I've asked various people from Ralph Baer to the ex MD of GI in scotland...
