Sorry if I got into the Saturn late. But I never bought one until 2003. And I enjoy the hell out of it. and I love it so much that I just have to get Wireless controllers for it.
oooooh! Where you got THOSE from man?! I like the usb style wireless controllers or unless they're for PC only
I got them from Micro from NFG forums http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=5180.0 He made like 6 controllers, but I think he sold all of them now. Not sure if he's going to make more batches. But anyways it's for the actual Saturn, and there is a battery inside, so that you can charge it with a USB cable like PS3 controllers.
It was a great console. It wasn't great for 3D, but even in that regard it could do some impressive things, in the right hands. But it was really great for 2D games. It's too bad it wasn't as successful in the west as it was in Japan. I have more Japanese Saturn games than I have Japanese games for any other system (like 25 or 26, I think), and I play my Japanese Saturn (which is a grey model 1 system) more than I play my US Saturn. The cases and cover art are always awesome. I actually kind of like the big US boxes too, though not as much as the Japanese versions. By the way, my sig is text from the cover of a Saturn game. See if you can guess which one...
Still my favorite console to this day. So many fond memories. Still regret selling most of my collection way back when, but ah well, it just gives me a chance to rebuild it later.
His V1 is open source. http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?board=6.0 But the ones I show in the pictures is V2. Where he creates his own PCB so that you don't have to program the micro controllers and have other improvements such as lower battery consumption and better signal strength. As for a diy kit, he also said to another user he can sell it as a diy kit if you want or a fully assemble controller. His Snes controller is DIY kit only though. The only problem is, I have no idea when he is making his next batch.
The Saturn I use now was found in the pouring rain sitting in a puddle next to some bin bags waiting to be picked up by the collectors. Took it home and cleaned it up. Still works fine to this very day.
What was the Japanese Saturn launch like? Was anyone there at the time who can remember? Here in the states it literally just arrived in stores without any fanfare. Did it sell well in Japan at launch?
I was there 4 months after the launch and have to say it was a fun time. Everywhere in Akihabara was showing Virtual Fighter plus portion videos.
Thats only 'cuz ocarina of time pioneered the gameplay elements we now know as "action-adventure". You might as well say citizen kane isn't anything special because you've seen so many other movies like it!
