Hello. I am just curious about multilayer with old portables (specificly GB and GG) and how many games they need. If I wanted to play something like "tertis" or "colums" for GB or GG respectively, would I need 2 games, one for each console, or just one game? Does this vary depending on the game? These consoles were before my time so if someone knows, please tell me. Thanks.
IIRC most if not all Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Gear games will demand for multiplayer a second copy of the game. The Game Boy Advance has a feature for streaming a small part of the game data to other consoles but it's actually a very restricted feature, it won't stream full games and I don't think the RAM used is even capable of holding up an entire game ROM data. In Mario Kart for example, by this method you're only able to play some tracks and only using Yoshi and there's the developers who didn't fully implement this feature as it would cut sales I guess. As for the GBA games supporting this feature: http://www.mobygames.com/attribute/sheet/attributeId,402/p,12/
On the original GB, each player needs their own Game Pak. For GBA and later Nintedo handhelds, depending on the game, you could do multiplayer with 1 copy of the gamepak. GB also had a special 4 player hub that came packed in with F1 Race. GBA multiplayer cables can be daisy chained (they sort of have a hub built in), so there is no need for a central hub. This is a list of multiplayer GB games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multiplayer_Game_Boy_games This is a list of multiplayer games for GBA that only require 1 game: http://squallsnake.com/blog-gba-single-pak-multiplayer-game-list/ GG works the same way as the original gameboy. Each player needs their own copy of the game. edit: whoops! I was too slow. As punishment, here is more info: The Lynx could have up to 4 players. Each player needed their own copy of the game. The PC Engine GT/TurboGrafx portable has weird multiplayer compatibility. It is game dependent. I.E., the game has to specifically have 2 player-portable support. The list of games that do appears to be very small: Columns, Falcon, Puzzle Boy, Spin Pair, Bomberman, and Bomberman 93. Each player would need their own copy of the game. Did the PCE LT have a turbo link port?
OK. That is what I thought. The first portable that I used multilayer on was a GBA. I never tried it with GBC and until recently never owned a GB or a GG (let alone 2). Thanks.
