I have a combined (to and from) 80 minute or so commute for work and want to maybe get some portable gaming done whilst I do so.
I'm likely going to get a switch eventually but for now I'm looking at actual portables and need some advice.

Do I find a cheap 3DS and go with that plus a couple of games to start me off, or is there a decent and inexspensive machine that would do emulation of various retro home/portableconsoles?
Not sure if there is any that can do 3D stuff well i.e. PS1/SAT/N64 but that would be nice for emulation, though any systems prior to that working well i.e. SNES/MD/PCE...etc is prefered as is the actual console and how good it is to use for said systems.

    Cheers

The Switch isn't an actual portable? News to me, I've used it outside of home plenty of times. :p

The PS Vita is pretty good for emulation when you use Henkaku, and the Vita scene is even making good progress with 3D stuff. There's a great native Vita port of Quake that runs smoothly and uses both joysticks, and there's even a port of the Daedalus N64 emulator. It can also run PS1 games pretty much perfectly because that functionality is integrated into the Vita's PSP support.

And trust me when I say the OLED screen on the first model Vitas is spectacular.

I had a OLED Vita with henkaku but it had some dead pixels, sold it on ebay because it collected dust. The Vitas native game library is very limited, but its still great for homebrew, PSP and PS1 Games.

New 3DS with custom Firmware is great in my opinion. It has a big library of native games, its possible to emulate a couple of retro systems (ps1, gba, snes, etc.). And its backward compatible to NDS.

How about buying the RS-97? Sure it's not modern day generation but it is cheap at 50 USD or less shipped plus as myvideo shows, it can be modded to run loads of great stuff.

The RS-97 reminds me of a handheld I used to have years ago called a Dingoo, the Dingoo was good but Mega Drive games had awful sound.
Might treat myself to an RS-97 it look good, thanks for the video Yakumo.

Subscibed to your chanel for BOTP but missed a few of your videos.

This looks interesting epsecially when you show it modded, a decent amount of stuff I can shove onto it and play which is good. Won't do 32bit stuff but that's not much of an issue as it's a bonus rather than a need
D-Pad is a bit of a downer but could maybe mod that or live with it if not.

A 3DS is a pretty good option, and cheap now (admittedly the Pokemon games are still holding value, as usual). If you get a decent controller, like the 8bitdo ones (which can work on the Switch and PC too) you can play a lot of 8 and 16 bit systems on most any newer Android phone. I hook up my tablet to a decent speaker and use that with Retroarch and it works really well.

Hey, I wasn't the one that exploded. I obviously got the dreaded "vampire gate" defect that everyone on Youtube is complaining about. JUST after the one year has passed, too, dammit!

Ah, thats because this is basically a Dingo once the modded software has been added. Best of all, Mega Drive audio is well done.
i think if you mod a pivot point under the D-pad it would be vastly improved.

I've seen one of those CoolBaby handhelds for about the £34 mark which is pretty reasonable for what it does, especially when you mod it.
Would get to play through games I've not played in years or a lot i've never played at all.

If you want simplicity in how you travel with your handheld, then definitely go 3DS.

Can you install CFW on a 3DS and if so are there any emulators available?
A 3DS would tick my boxes as a more current system with games to match, then if I could CFW and add emulators that'd give me a retro fix.

Ended up ordering a coolbaby rs-97 today. £31 with free shipping and an Ali express voucher so not too expensive but should be fun to mod it.

Got the device today, tested a few games and overall its a nice little device though definitely not perfect the way it is shipped.

Currently on my 4th attempt to get it modded. Win32 disk imager keeps throwing up an error 5 when trying to write the retro game cfw to a 16gb sd card on my desktop pc.

PSP got me through more 1.5 hour-long bus commutes than I can thank it for
The only downside was the weak audio output. As an MP3 player, it could never quite drown out all the loud noises on the bus.

Believe me brother, there are plenty of portable gaming options, and Nintendo Switch seems to be a very promissing handheld console, especially with current gen games being ported to it. However, if you are like me, an older game that staid a long time without time to play and want to "recover" the lost time and play some great games you haven't oportunity to play, then go for a PS Vita with Henkaku Custom Firmware. Believe me man, you won't regret.

You get a GREAT library of native PSVita Games to play like Killzone: Mercenary, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus, Gravity Rush Vita , Resident Evil Revelations 2, Assassins Creed Liberation, Hotline Miami, Borderlands 2 (which I am playing right now, and having some GREAT FUN). Also you got some cool PS2 Remasters like God of War Collection, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, Ratchet and Clank Trilogy, Jak and Daxter Trilogy.

Also by using Henkaku Custom Firmware and Adrenaline PSP Emulator, you can easily download any PSP ISO and play, so you have ALL the PSP Games Library with some HUGE MASTERPIECES like God of War Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, Metal Gear PeaceWalker, Final Fantasy Crisis Core, Killzone Liberation, among others.

Forget to say that you can install RetroArch Emulator and play almost ANY OLD GEN CONSOLES (nes, snes, genesis, etc).

Now thanks to my fellow psvita dev Rinnegatamante and his custom VitaGL, you can fully play some cool PC Games like Quake 1, Quake 2 and Quake 3, now een Half Life 1 is fully playable on PS Vita. And soon some other cool pc games will be fully playable on PS Vita (like Return to Castle Wolfeinstein).

For me who stopped playing games from since Nintendo 64 era (my last console), so PS Vita is an awesome oportunity to recover the lost time without playing games (it was for various reasons, mainly because I dedicated all my free time to study game development so I did not have except some few time to play some games, most for getting ideas for my game development studyies), and I by no way regret for having purchases a PS Vita last year, rather I regret for not having purchased it before... :)

Another important info, is don't give too much importance to game reviews about psvita games. In example, Resident Evil Revelations on PS Vita had some very poor reviews, however in my opinion it is one of the most beautifull and fun PSVita games.

Also God of War Collection. The marjority of the game reviews said this game sucks (because of low resolution of cutscenes and other technical problems), however, even though it has some technical, I was able to beat God of War 1 and 2 without any problems, and had some cool FUN.

Even though PSVita graphics are not mind blowing like Nintendo Switch (except for Killzone Mercenaries), trust me, the PSVita Screen is so cool that all the games look AWESOME (especially if you play on dark).

Sorry for my long post, however psvita is a very underrated console, and it has some cool and promissing future now thanks to the homebrew and hacking scene comunity.

    Cheers.

Well I finally got the CFW installed yesterday on the RS-97 handheld, I'm on version 1.2.
Have GBA, MegaDrive, NES and PCEngine roms installed all of which seem to work well, though haven't tested every game.

As for the handheld, it's just about nicer than I expected. The screen is great, face buttons feel good, D-pad is OK, shoulder buttons are OK.
Overall doesn't feel as cheap as some chinese stuf I've bought over the years.

Still playing about with getting it all setup how I want and figuring out each emulator but should be fun little device to use on my commute.
