It all starts when I win this bid for an article, then see the shipping costs being around $70 which is really high for something that small

A quick look at shipping charts show that shipping for this item should be no more than $24, so its pretty clear theres something fishy around here.

I contact the seller, it takes forever to reply, and he says he can lower it to $60

That's still almost $40 above the real shipping costs, and I let him know about that

Now he goes ahead, modifies the invoice (something he previously say he couldn't do) and charges me $5,000 for shipping, so I cant buy the gizmo unless I agree to this batshit insane price

Yet for some reason ebay has no way to report this, my only option is to ask this fucker to drop the sale which by looking at his shitty attitude tells me he's going to butcher my score.

    Any ideas?

Go to contact page and give details there. You will get that removed/cancelled no problem.

I thought they had measures in place to deter this sort of thing? It seems nowadays you have to list your item under a specific category, and each category has a shipping dollar limit.

Anyway, you can definitely report the guy, even if it means just going through a general "contact us" menu if you can't find a specific report button.

What was his user rating? I always check that before bidding on something.

As a buyer you'll only be able to get no feedback or positive feedback.

I'd go ahead and leave him negative feedback saying he is a fraud.

He could start a non payment dispute with you and you would get a strike. Contact ebay first.

eBay sure has some shitty coders if they cant build an algorithm that at least detects something like crazy high shipping costs, let alone the guy selling a pink market for half a million...

Anyway, its all a game really, they really dont care 'cause theres nobody trying to topple ebay to begin with.

Just check customer support, its a bitch to file a report to anything, pretty much built so you'll give up.

I just found the magical URL for actual reports (one that you cant reach through ebay) and even then I get this bullshit automated response.

Have you tried calling eBay? They have a number listed in their Contact Us section.

There has been reports of people hijacking ebay and impersonating ebay employees. Perhaps this is along the same line.

You have nothing to worry about. just be patient.

Worst case, he opens an unpaid item dispute - if you do not pay, you just get a strike against your account (and you need like 5 in 3 months for anything to happen)

And even if you get a strike, it will be removed when someone gets back to you.

It's a scam. People list items below market value and then jack up shipping to cover the cost price + profit from the sale. Then, in the event something goes wrong and you need a refund they refund the purchase price, less shipping. Just play along with the dispute until it runs it's course. Even in the worst case, you'll just get an X, which doesn't mean jack if your an honest buyer to begin with. It will be gone in no time.
