Alright, so I was running arround to different flea markets, pawn shops, and various other places that sell second hand goods today. I was getting fairly tired of looking as it had been a lousy day for bargan hunting, and i'd seen more of those 'NES in an N64 controller' type systems then I care to recall. But just as I was about to give up hope of finding anything of worth I stumbled across an old 'Sega Master System' and several games for it. Well the price was right (after negotiations) so I figured why not, i've never owned one before and I had heard that it was a decent system, so I bought it.

Uppon getting home, hooking it up, putting in a game, and powering it on though I noticed something was wrong. The game I had put in was called 'Parlour Games', but the one comming up on screen was 'Missile Defense 3-D'. I figured that maybe the game had the wrong casing or something, and so I tried 'Double Dragon', but once again 'Missile Defense 3-D' came up. Now obviously the chances of two games in a row would have the wrong case around their board is slim to nill. So I did a little experiment and powered on the system with no game in at all, and what happened shocked me: What appeared on screen was once more 'Missile Defense 3-D'. I examined the system to see if maybe it was one of those built in type games (Like I said, i've never own a SMS before), but their was no indiction as to that being the case.

So as best I can tell, I have bought a SMS that has been possesd by the spirit of a long dead game known only as 'Missile Defense 3-D'.

So does anyone know in reality what might be going on here? Is the system supposed to be doing what its doing, or do I really have some sort of seriously messed up sms?

There are numerous versions of the SMS. Some have Alex Kidd as a built in game, some hang-on, some just a hidden maze puzzle game. There is however a version that does have Missile Defense 3d built in..I believe the deluxe version or whatever it is called, that originally came boxed with the 3d glasses and light phaser, as opposed to the budget console only, or console and gun only packs.

As for it not wanting to play other games..this is certainly not unheard of. I myself have an sms2 with alex kidd built in..I'd say on average it takes 5 goes for me to get it to run any games other than the built in alex kidd whenever I turn it on. I always find the blow in the cart method works eventually. Probably best though to clean the all the carts up as well as the cart slot.

Here in the US, my brother has the 3D set that came with the console and the 3D goggles + phaser gun. But the Missile Defense 3D game came on a cartridge (complete with case and manual). He still has the entire boxed system, so I know this is a fact.

I'm sure it is but there are numerous sms revisions over the years. The first sms I had when it first came out came with Hang-On, in card format ie not built in. Later sms had hang-on built in. Same too with the later packs.

Of course if somehow the game has worked its way on there by some mod or freak supernatural occurence then I'll hold my hands up and admit I'm wrong...but I don't think so tbh.

The 3D SegaScope package was originally sold with Missile Defense 3D built-into the ROM, and later versions supplied it on a cartridge instead.
Nice find, it's probably the rarest US revision of the Master System 1 (not worth a great deal unless it's boxed & complete tho) :)

The cart connections in the Master System are harder than any other consoles. Make sure you forced the cartridge in the connector, and try again. If the problem continues, the cartridge port might be defective.

The II series was europe-brazil only, the only SMS in the us was the big red and black one, with all the ports and stuff

  12. That set was called the "Sega Master System," which has always led me to believe that sega never intended the whole system to be called the Sega Master System. Early on, the seem to have usually just referred to it as "The Sega System" and the console itself as "The Sega Power Base."

We got the SMS II in the U.S., though it's not as common here as it is in Europe or Brazil. And our SMS II's don't have any games built into the ROM at all.

    ...word is bondage...

Not quite - in the early 1986/7 catalogues, the basic console-only package is called "Master System" in Europe & "Base System" in the US/Canada. The set bundled with the light phaser & Hang On/Safari Hunt was called "Master System Plus" in Europe & "Master System" in the US/Canada.
The deluxe package being discussed in this thread with the 3D Glasses & Missile Defense 3D was called the "SuperSystem" in Europe and "SegaScope 3D" in North AMerica.

Hmm, I could've sworn that the NTSC Master System II's have Alex Kidd built-in. I've got one, but don't think I've ever plugged it in. I'll check it if I can remember.
