Out of interest, is it possible to track down anime LDs in Osaka (Den Den Town) or Tokyo (I'm assuming Akihabara)? Wouldn't mind picking a couple up for novelty's sake of something old I used to watch when I was younger (would love to see a LD for something Project A-Ko!) when we head to Japan for a holiday.

Oh, and any idea on cost as well - I remember reading something a while back that LDs were super cheap because of the shift to more modern tech, but given games can cost big money even if they're old, it wouldn't surprise me if anime LDs are doing the same thing!

Any large Book-Off will have single LDs starting from 250 Yen. Can't say anything about specific anime series but I remember seeing sets going for a couple of thousand Yen.

The Liberty chain used to have tons of them in Akiba. I imagine now they've probably trimmed it down to a single store that has them. They're all over Yahoo Japan for pennies.

I went around recently to Liberty and they only had a small bin of titles no one wants. I think it'll be difficult to find stuff outside of auctions at this point and titles only released on LD are fetching money still. I know I just bought a title for about 4000 yen.

One of my Yahoo Japan proxy users bought about 10 Hi Vision LD's a year or so ago. Pricey.

There are places that do have LDs, but most of these are going to be in the sticks and taking a two hour trip to a store is probably not a good thing to do on holiday. When I am in Japan, I am there for several months so I can take my time. Last time I was there, my local (!) Hard off store has a dozen bins of LDs from 11 yen(!), I was temped by a Urusei Yatsura box set in another store for about 2100 yen but it was far too heavy to consider trying to ride home with it. With LD being a dead medium they are going to disappear very fast from Akihabara where rent is not so cheap.

Yep, I went into Medialand on the weekend for old times sake. Where the PC-Engine section used to take up 2 walls, the entire 16-bit era has been truncated down to a single nook. Sucks.

Media Land and Liberty both suck now for retro. Down to Trader HQ and Super Potato for the most part...
