Post your favourite all time desktop

Just curious to see what people prefer here for desktops. It can be any desktop, either one that you've owned in the distant past or one that you own currently.

The one I've probably liked the most, and regret selling the most is my Dell XPS 210. Yeah, it's Dell, but man- liked every detail in that computer. Everything.
Sure it wasn't good for gaming, or serious productivity but I don't do either of those on a computer. It was quiet, small, sexy, and so easy to open I wouldn't be surprised if my parents could figure it out (can't tell a graphics card from a USB plug).
Had it upgraded later to a C2Q, but then sold it to pay some expenses. I'm now looking to buy one back.

But let's here your story. Maybe theres a desktop that I'd like better than this and I just haven't seen it yet.

 

Custom build. Pick what you want, and install it how ever you want.

But yes, that is a good way to make sure you get what you want.

While in High School I bought a HP Pavilion t360a, great machine, still running today my Dad uses it

 

All my PC's have been custom built, so i have just upgraded as needed.

This is probably the spec i used for the longest, it started life as my first PC, a Pentium 2 @ 300mhz. Over the years it was upgraded, eventually got a new case, and everything inside it changed and so on. I think i used the spec for about 5 years though before scrapping just about everything and building a Core2Duo system, which has since been replaced with a Core i5 build.

My current PC or my first. I'll post specs of the former later but my first was a Celeron at 1.8ghz or so with a 60gb hard drive and 128mbs of ram, MAYBE 256.

 

LOL, if your first computer had a processor with over 1 Ghz, you're a little kid :witless:

 

Ive never owned a branded computer, they're just too expensive here, and as a result I would just update components on my current computer as it was needed or as I got money to do so.

My most favorite system, had to be my 200mhz MMX sometime during the 90s,it started life as a 120mhz and I got my fathers CPU when he upgraded.

Not to mention that It had a Voodoo 1 I nagged my father for years to get me one after he got a Diamond Fire GL 1000(IIRC) ,and he finally budged ,and got me the voodoo 1, I remember he was more than a bit jealous after he saw how good it performed compared to his expensive Diamond Fire GL,he much later upgraded to a Banshee, Needless to say I didnt want his Diamond Fire,still don't know where it went tough.

Other notable things was it had a 12x cdrom and a Sound Blaster 16 PnP I got a year or so back as a present.

Really wish that I had atleast something left from it, but my father used most of it as it got upgraded over the years, or resold it to afford upgrades later on...

Lots of fond memories on that computer, and it has to be my favorite, till later on I finally grew up and was able to buy my own parts (AMD k7 1000mhz system)

PS First computer that I properly worked on was a 486DX2

 

Problem with people having a first computer over 1GHz?
My first one was a 900MHz, so I'm below the line I suppose. My parent splurged on that thing, spending $3000 on it. We recently found the receipt. Bricks were shat.
Macs are good, but sometimes I feel like you're spending a little too much. iMac's are an exception, those are normally a pretty good deal for what your paying for, especially the 27" line. That screen is magic, and the specs aren't bad either, for an all in one.

 

Our first ever computer was built for Windows 95 and struggled to run ME when my brother installed. I was merely talking about MY first computer (all to myself)

 

My first computer was some big machine my mom bought at a military auction. It had DOS with some kind of custom UI. Around the same time, I got a Commodore 64 and Apple IIgs. Though they were a lot of fun, my favorite desktop was a Packard Bell Multimedia C110. It was my first Windows 95 machine and had the following...
- 120Mhz Pentium processor
- 16 MB RAM
- 1 MB Video Memory
- 4 GB HDD (later upgraded to 6GB)
- 8X CD-ROM
- 14.4 kbps dial-up modem w/ pass through connector to use a physical phone with dialer.
Even for back then, it might have been a little sub-standard, but I did more with that computer than any other. I ripped my first CD on it, created my first digital audio recordings and fell in love with the emerging world of emulation with it.

 

God I remember the wide spread use of the 56K fax modem, and how I could never call my friend because her dad was always online.
I've got that dial tone imprinted in my brain.

My first self funded new PC (not borrowed or used) was awesome back in the day and may kick some ass these days too.

I bought parts from ehre there and everywhere to do it justice.

It had an Intel Pentium 4 3.06Ghz CPU (@£500 alone... also first retail chip with Hyperthreading)
Asus P4G8X Deluxe motherboard
1Gb of DDR RAM (a lot for the time)
IBM Ultrastar 36Z15 15K RPM SCSI HDD, fastest HDD in the world and seriously LOUD. It sounded like a turbine. It was noticeably fast too!

I actually cheaped on the graphics card a little bit and had a low to mid range GeForce 4 Ti in there for about 9 months until I bought a GeForce FX around Christmas 2003.

My current 2500K + GTX 560 Ti + SSD machine beats it hands down, but there is a special place for that beast. I did learn not to buy high end stuff all the time though as I was broke by the time I was done with it and it depreciated so much I only got around £500 when I came to sell it - inbcluding a legal copy of Windows XP home.

 

Haha, my first computer hat 1.5GHz if I recall correctly, I got it at the age of 15 though. The first one I used was a crazy custom built machine from the mid-80s (no Commodore) with b/w screen and a massive 4MB-hard drive and 16kb RAM I believe. In 1996, my friend's father bought an old used computer that we used all the time to play weird DOS-games from those compilation CDs, it had 66MHz (a number that it was constantly displaying proudly on a LED-display implemented into the tower case LOL).

Then I used a few of my father's old Win95 laptops until we got a 350MHz tower in 1999. It was such a pain to browse the internet with this thing as long as until 2003. Ugh.

That was the final specs of our computer that lasted from 1995 to 2002... With daily use, and still works today (except for the HDD which died).

 

I think my all time favorite would have been the 486-66mhz machine I built a long while ago. 8mb of 30 pin memory, and I seem to remember big time splurging on a 250mb harddrive. I spent so much time with that machine, I still have it but it is sitting not plugged in. I think I managed to get a Sound Blaster 8bit in it and eventually upgraded to the 16bit version, when I got a 2x CD-ROM for it.

That machine would be followed closely by a P2-300Mhz, I need to boot it up as I don't remember how much memory it had in it. It did have a Nvidia Riva TNT card in it with dual 3DFX Voodoo 2 12mb cards. That machine even had a US Robotics 56.6K modem.

 

Jesus, that second machine had some serious power. Impressive, really.

Splurging on a 250MB drive just sounds weird. Especially that 2x CD drive. What an upgrade to go for!

 

My very first PC was a 386 Nimbus with a TURBO Button!!! WOW!! man, that was such a heap of shit but the Hard Drive held many SFC ROM images which saved on a shit load of floppy discs for the Wild Card.

My first computer in Japan was a Sotec 1.3Ghz Celron with a 4GB Hard Drive. Man, 4GB was big enough back in 1999. Since then I've always built my own computers. More of a pain but cheaper on the pocket and you can upgrade whenever you want.
