So I have this g4 Powerbook with OS X 10.4.11 installed on it and safari crashes... I guess this is what happens when you force a beta onto the general public. Anyway I uninstalled safari 3.0.4 and then installed 3.1 beta and restarted as prompted. Upon reboot the system just hangs at the Mac OS X loading screen and never even attempts to go any farther. To make matters worse. I had an Apple hardware test cd in the system before shutting down and now I cannot even eject it inorder to put an installed cd into the drive. This whole experience has left me quite soured and I don't even know where to go next because unlike Microsoft and their top notch technet pages... Apple has basically nothing that aids in technical self repairs.
Restart and hold down the mouse button during the process. If there is no major problem, the door should open. or http://www.ehmac.ca/mac-ipod-help-troubleshooting/61246-cd-rom-wont-eject.html
Have you tried Apple's technical support pages for Powerbook: http://www.apple.com/support/powerbook/ or, more specifically, this solution: Restart the Computer You can eject a disc from the drive by restarting the computer and holding down the trackpad button while the computer starts up. Press the trackpad button until the drive ejects the disc. Also, sometimes a shut-off whilst booting can screw with the PMU - which can cause odd things to happen with both hardware and software. Follow the advice on this page, as it cured a non-booting ill on my iBook: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Ok I got the disc out of the drive and I now need to back up some data that was stored on the HDD. Is there an easy way to access any of this before I wipe it all with a clean install? I'm assuming that I should use target disk mode right?
Yeah I've got to pick up a crossover cable tomorrow as all I have right now is a 6 to 4 pin. Hopefully I can just rip the minimum of personal data off of it and reinstall tomorrow after work. I'm still wondering what the hell went wrong with that safari install.
