Yes this has to do with a Disagreement on AIM. I use all the mentioned control methods but prefer my sticks. I HAVE to use the Analog stick on 360 because nothing else seems to be viable.
Over at Shoryuken Arcade sticks was the top pick followed by the Saturn pad. nobody voted analog. So I went to seek the opinion of a different group of gamers.
well you ve answered your own question. The 360's D-pad, as you have come to appreciate in practice, is not ideal for old-school gaming ( fighting games haven't changed much since then, with a few exceptions), hence you're forced to rely on the analogue stick. That said, a good d-pad can be an ally when your aim is speed. Tapping a button (D-pad) is quite a few milliseconds faster than even the best-arcade-class stick - giving an edge to the weilder. It of course comes down to personal preference, and I have found myself selecting different control methods subject to the game played.
Well most if not all of the hard core plays are going to put down stick but after that it's got to be the Saturn pad for sure (Not that shit that the US had at first). Even in Japan many arcade cabinets have the Saturn controller as an option for 2D fighters. So even in the arcades it's regarded as a good pad for fighters. Yakumo
We can go a step firther with the Arcade sticks. What type or arcade stick? Japanese Lolipop or American/European Baseball bat? I can use either for 3d fighters but for 2d I need the baseball bat stick.
Lolipops. I'm a fan of Sanwa parts. My Ps3 arcade stick is the sega VSHG which is all sanwa parts (joystick & buttons). My arcade cabinet it self is all Sanwa parts. Sadly my one disapointment is I mistakenly ordered 4 way metal brackets and not 8 way for my arcade joysticks.
I duno about that, tapping the arcade stick to the right or left twice can be done VERY quickly, You can do if you don't let the stick return to neutral position. you tap it, let it release just enough to let off the microswitch and tap again. two presses can be done in microseconds. as for what kind of buttons and sticks it really depends on the game. any of the capcom vs series vseides CVS I will use Happ. Same for all SNK games and all old Capcom. For 3D sanwa. For CVS, and SF3:3S sanwa.
well compared to the only other controller found in Japanese arcades being a Famicom pad and that's only for Famicom games I'd say many. At least in Yamaguchi and Kyushu every arcade that has a good selection of 2D fighters has at least 1 system with a Saturn pad connected. That's pretty good going if you ask me. Sanwa for sure. I can't stand those baseball bat sticks. Holding them is like holding your nob for a wank  THey were limited editions from what I remember. They'll probably remake them again in the future I guess. Yakumo
Where's the "I only play fighters on my Saturn" option? Which is what I do right now, I have a lot of SF games on various platforms (in fact, I have every home port of Zero 3, last time I checked) but I really only play them on Saturn, due to the controller. I know I'm missing out on a lot of other fighters, but I'm fine with that for now
